Congratulations to OISE professors Charles Chen, Kathleen Gallagher and Jim Slotta on the renewal of their Canada Research Chairs.
“These renewals will strengthen OISE’s capacity for leading-edge research, create opportunities for OISE students and faculty, enhance our profile as a world leader in research, and increase our potential to impact people’s lives in and through education,” said OISE Professor and Dean Julia O’Sullivan.
Charles will continue his work as the Canada Research Chair in Life Career Development. Professional self-development is an integral part of maintaining a competitive edge for individuals and entire societies. By studying life career development from the perspective of vocational and career psychology, Charles’ research will help new immigrants, recent graduates, adults in career transition, special needs adults, and older adults with career transitions.
Kathleen retains the Canada Research Chair in Theatre, Youth and Research in Urban Schools to increase collaboration across social and academic divides through theatre education. She aims to understand and foster the kind of school climates that promote harmony and help city kids overcome daily challenges. In the process, she is understanding the vital role that creativity and the arts play in promoting such goals.
Jim, as Canada Research Chair in Education and Technology, will develop a technology platform for smart classroom research – the Knowledge Community and Inquiry (KCI) model, which engages classrooms in socially oriented activities with advanced learning technologies. He will develop rich learning experiences and establish a network and community for open educational resources – sure to spark exchange and growth of innovations across Canada and beyond.
These renewals come with $1.5 million in funding.
OISE faculty hold six other Canada Research Chairs including:
Jim Cummins
Canada Research Chair in Language Learning and Literacy Development
Karen E. Mundy
Canada Research Chair in Global Governance and Comparative Educational Change
Benjamin Levin
Canada Research Chair in Educational Policy Studies
David Livingstone

Katreena Scott

The Canada Research Chairs program is the cornerstone of Canada’s new innovation strategy. The goal of all Chairs is to advance the frontiers of knowledge within their fields, not only through their own work, but also by coordinating the efforts of other researchers within their area of expertise.
