The Jackman Humanities Institute is a collaborative scholarly community that serves as a portal for humanities at U of T. The Institute creates and fosters physical and virtual networks among U of T humanities scholars and is designed to stimulate interaction among scholars, providing further impetus for innovative teaching and research projects.
The Institute is developing new interdisciplinary modes of understanding human experience by offering a variety of ways for students and faculty from U of T’s three campuses to learn from each other and visiting scholars. In doing so, the Institute promotes U of T’s participation as a leader in the humanities.
As part of OISE’s membership, Dean Julia O’Sullivan has been appointed to the Council of Humanities Institute Deans, which provides both oversight and financial resources to the Institute. The Director of the Jackman Humanities Institute, Dr. Robert B. Gibbs, Department of Philosophy, reports to this group.“Our membership in the Jackman Humanities Institute reflects the importance of the humanities at OISE and will offer networking and funding opportunities for our students and faculty” said O’Sullivan.
The Institute also has an Advisory Board to advise the Director on major questions of orientation and vision for the Institute, including policies, programs, and general oversight of all activities. OISE will appoint one member to the Advisory Board.
