April 28, 2011

By Jennifer Sipos-Smith

The Centre for Educational Research on Languages and Literacies (CERLL) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto will host more than 1000 people at a conference that celebrates linguistic diversity at OISE today and tomorrow.

Delegates include ESL (English as a Second Language) and ELD (English Language Development) teachers, classroom teachers, guidance staff, teacher-librarians, special education staff, curriculum leaders, administrators, scholars and Faculties of Education.

Keynote speakers include OISE's Cathy Marks-Krpan, a professor in the department for Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning.  Her primary research interests focus on student communication through images, numbers and words in mathematics and science. She has also completed research on the development of critical thinking through graphic organizers (such as concept maps and mind maps). She is currently investigating the strategies elementary educators use to teach ESL students mathematics, and will discuss "Supporting Elementary English Language Learners in Mathematics".

Other keynote speakers include: Jowi Taylor, a writer and broadcaster with CBC Radio, as well as Nancy Commins from the University of Colorado at Denver, and Nicholas Keung, a journalist with The Toronto Star.  View more about the conference, the work of the Centre for Educational Research on Languages and Literacies or the Toronto District School Board
