AERA Annual Meeting 2012

On April 14th at the Pan Pacific Crystal Pavilion in Vancouver, BC Dean Julia O’Sullivan greeted over 150 OISE alumni at a reception held in conjunction with the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) annual meeting. The reception was co-hosted by the University of Wisconsin, Madison, the Institute of Education, University of London and the University of Melbourne, MGSE. Guests were entertained by a jazz trio led by Arthur Pascau Smith as they mingled with fellow alumni, OISE faculty/staff and current students.
AERA, founded in 1916, is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and evaluation and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results.

Graduate Student Professional Development: Career Evening, Part II

Career & Networking Evening

Join OISE alumni and students for a Career & Networking Evening taking place on Thursday, October 27 at 6pm, in the OISE Library. This is a chance to hear presentations by other professionals working in community, government and higher education organizations, and to reconnect with alumni colleagues.

OISE Alum earns prestigious Arbor Award

OISE congratulates alumna Sylvia M. McPhee (M.Ed. 1978) for being awarded a prestigious University of Toronto Arbor Award.
The Arbor Awards recognize outstanding service to the University of Toronto by an alum or a friend of the university.
A reception was held on September 13 at the President's Residence to honour each of this year's recipients.
Sylvia has been a dedicated member of the OISE community for more than 30 years, working on projects as diverse as a alumni events and anniversary celebrations to revisions of the Alumni Association's constitution.

OISE Alumni in CBC Documentary

Starting the week of August 29, CBCs The National will be airing a documentary entitled “Great Teachers” that features four of OISE’s own alumni: Paul Aikins (B.Ed. 1998), Nicole Magson
(B.Ed. 2000), Tiffany Shelton (B.Ed. 2008) and Keith Hoare (Diploma in Tech Ed, 2008).
The series documents the real lives of teachers in both their workplace and at home, and the struggles they encounter juggling the stresses of both places. Airing over the span of four days, the series will profile each of these alum, all of whom are teachers within the TDSB. For more info click here

OISE Spring Reunion Brunch 2011

As part of UofT's annual Spring Reunion event, the OISE Alumni Association hosted a morning brunch on May 28, 2011.
The annual event brought together alumni from all years, this year honouring those who graduated in a year that ends in a "6" or a "1." Those were who celebrating the 25th anniversary of their graduation year were also honoured.
The highlight of the event was a talk by the guest of honour, distinguished alumnus, Dr. Christopher Spence (M.Ed. 1993, Ed.D. 1996) as well as a welcome speech by Dean Julia O'Sullivan. As the director of the Toronto District School Board, Dr. Spence offered some unique insight on models for success in teaching.The event was a great success, with close to 70 alumni and friends in attendance – the highest turnout since the event's inception. We thank all of you who came out to make the morning so memorable.

OISE Alumni Association Slogan Competition

Congratulations, Vanessa! The OISE Alumni Association is proud to announce that a winner was selected for the Slogan Competition. The contest asked participants to be creative and come up with a concise and forward looking slogan that identifies with the Association's mission to serve as the signature in its communications and outreach efforts. The winning slogan was announced at the OISE Alumni Association Spring Reunion Brunch where Vanessa proudly recited her slogan to a crowd of alumni.

OISE launches first ever Alumni E-Newsletter
The OISE Alumni Office is proud to announce the launch of its first ever electronic newsletter. With over 70,000 OISE alumni worldwide, the newsletter aims to keep alumni up to date on what's happening at OISE, as well as to support communication through social media groups on Facebook, Twitter, Linked IN and YouTube. Nearly 20,000 people worldwide received a copy of the e-newsletter which featured information on events such as the University of Toronto’s Spring Reunion, The Jackson Lecture, and many more. The e-newsletter includes sections such as: alumni in the news, awards and distinctions as well as remembrances and tributes to lost colleagues, classmates and friends.

AERA Alumni Reception in New Orleans
April 11, 2011
On Saturday April 9, 2011, OISE hosted a special reception for Alumni in New Orleans, Louisiana. The event was in conjuction with the University of Wisconsin and the London Institute for Studies in Education, and was part of the annual American Educational Reserach Association's (AERA) general meeting. The AERA general meeting draws thousands of educators from across the continent for a series of presentations, courses and workshops on education.
Over 100 OISE faculty and alumni came out to the special event including several alumni from Louisiana and the surrounding regions.
Next year's AERA general meeting takes place in Vancouver, B.C. We look forward to seeing you.
