Wisniewski Award Dean Jane Gaskell accepted the Wisniewski
Award on behalf of OISE in recognition of OISE's significant
contributions to the theory and practice of teacher education at
the business meeting of The Society of Professors of Education
(SPE) at the American Education Research Association
(AERA) conference in San Deigo, California.

William T. Grant Scholarship for Exceptional Early-Career
Research The William T. Grant Foundation has awarded Assistant
Professor Guanglei Hong with a five year scholarship to support
her work as principal investigator on her project:'Casual
Inference Methods for Studying Instruction Effects on Language
Minority Students'. The foundation provides mentorship through
collaborative meetings. More...

Njoki Wane to lead new Office of Teaching Support
Professor Njoki Wane has accepted the position of Director of the Office
of Teaching Support at OISE (OTSO) for a three year term commencing
July 1, 2009. The creation of OTSO was a key recommendation of the
Teaching Task Force, and Professor Wane will assume the key
leadership role in establishing and developing this new teaching
support office.
David Montemurro appointed the Director, Secondary Initial
Teacher Education Program (Consecutive) David Montemurro
is the incoming Director of the Secondary Initial Teacher Education
Program beginning July 1, 2009. Since 2004, David has been
involved with OISE as a lecturer, the coordinator of the Inner-City
Education Secondary Cohort, and an instructor of
Intermediate/Senior Curriculum and Instruction as well as
Additional Qualification courses. In addition, David serves as Chair
of the Initial Teacher Education Committee and is a member of the
Centre for Urban Schooling.
Art Exhibit, Creative Transformations: Living and Learning
through Art was held April 6 - 13, 2009 at OISE. The event
showcased the work of 23 artists (10 ITE students, 5 graduate
students, 4 staff members, 1 ITE instructor and 3 alumni). The
exhibit provides an opportunity for artists within the community to
share the questions, reflections and problems that they have been
pursuing and investigating in their artwork. It is an opportunity for
the community to see works created by ITE students enrolled in visual
arts courses, graduate students and staff, faculty and alumni engaged in various forms of art-making. In its fourth year the exhibit provides an opportunity for people who would like to exhibit their work to come together and present the art of the community to the community.
Earth Day links with sustainability work at OISE
On April 6, 2009, OISE's Sustainability Advisory Committee (SAC)
held a Sustainability Fair at OISE to mark Earth Day. Various
vendors, educational organizations and environmental groups
presented displays and information to the OISE community. The
goal of the Sustainability Advisory Committee is to provide a forum
for the advancement of sustainability goals within the OISE
community in collaboration with similar initiatives and
responsiblities within the University of Toronto.

Lifetime Contribution Award Professor Ruth E.S. Hayhoe was
awarded the Lifetime Contribution Award for a lifetime of profound
contribution, leadership and research in comparative and international
higher education by the Higher Education Special Interest Group at the
2009 CIES (Comparative International Education Society) conference
in Charleston South Carolina on March 22, 2009.

Graduate Scholarship in Women's Studies The City of
Toronto awarded Willa Liu, a PhD student in the Sociology in
Education and Women's Studies programs the 2009 Graduate
Scholarship. Liu's work examines lifelong learning and unpaid
household work on Chinese professional women and highlights the
challenges that newcomers when transitioning to life in Canada.

INSTITUTE OF CHILD STUDY: Research Conference The
Institute of Child Study presents a research conference on
fostering research exchange among ICS faculty and students and
the greater OISE community. When: April 29, 2009 1-7pm.
Where: OISE Library, 252 Bloor Street West, Toronto and will
include a light dinner. RSVP: Christine Davidson, Laidlaw Research

RESEARCH: SSHRC results reveal substantial gains
OISE is pleased to receive the results of the SSHRC Standard
Research Grant competition and to congratulate principal and
co-investigators across the institution. OISE principal investigators
achieved a 48% success rate resulting in $1.8 million research
funding over the next three years. This is a substantial
improvement over the previous two competitions. Best wishes
to all OISE recipients as they embark on their research

Florence Denmark Award recognition for role in mentoring
The Association for Women in Psychology has bestowed its
prestigious Florence Denmark Distinguished Mentorship Award on
Niva Piran for her leadership in mentoring and inspiring women,
particularly supporting, supervising and guiding students. Dr.
Piran's research passion is health-promoting schools --
developing in-depth understanding of social processes that shape
students' body and self experiences.
