SSHRC study focus on role of social business in reducing poverty
Jack Quarter will lead a team of researchers representing 13 universities and 21 community-based organizations in a new SSHRC Community-University Research Alliances project. Social Business and Marginalized Social Groups will advance theoretical understanding of social businesses that balance economic and social objectives to support community interventions intended to reduce poverty and address the needs of marginalized groups.
Prof. Quarter worked closely with members of the Social Economy Centre to prepare the proposal: Laurie Mook (pictured above with Prof. Quarter), Sherida Ryan, an OISE PhD graduate who will serve as the CURA coordinator, Prof. Daniel Schugurensky, and community partners, the Ontario Co-operative Association the Centre for Social Innovation and the Toronto Enterprise Fund.
Gordon Cressy Awards recognize outstanding contributions
William Deacon, a candidate for a Master of Arts in Child Study and Education at the Institute of Child Study is among four OISE students to receive a 2010 Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Award. By taking on significant leadership roles, William has fostered close ties between students and faculty and promoted a culture of mutual respect and understanding among students. The other OISE Cressy Award recipients are Kirk Perris, Paul Banahene, and Andrea Cousineau.
PhD student ranked in Canada's top 100 influential women
Second-year CTL student Melania Chwyl received the Canada's Top 100 Award from the Executive Women's Network in the Future Leaders category, which recognizes exceptional young women who have distinguished themselves early in their careers and show great potential. A student in the CIDE collaborative program, she is highly involved in global anti human trafficking education initiatives and works extensively in Ukraine with the Human Trafficking Awareness Project.
Reminder: Teaching, Staff Award Nominations due March 28
The March 28, 2010 deadline for the OISE Teaching Excellence Awards and the Dr Claire Alleyne Staff Excellence Award is fast approaching. We appreciate and depend upon the OISE community bringing forward worthy candidates for these prestigious awards as a way of recognizing and honoring their achievements and exemplary contributions to teaching and learning at OISE. 2010 Robbie Case Memorial Lecture

Leading developmental cognitive neuroscientist Dr Adele Diamond spoke about her work with children in her lecture, Resonating with Robbie Case - Continuing His Legacy: Current approaches to optimizing all aspects of a child's development on February 11.
