Visiting Scholars Funding Program

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Visiting Scholars Funding Program is funded by the Office of the Associate Dean, Programs. The program is open ONLY to faculty at OISE and is intended to help support (not fully fund) the visit of a Visiting Scholar who has already been approved by a department/unit at OISE. Funding that is available through the Visiting Scholars Funding Program should be seen as a contribution to the overall fundraising that may need to take place to fund a Visiting Scholar’s visit to OISE. The Visiting Scholars Funding Program is comprised of three different activities:

The Distinguished Speakers Series
The Distinguished Speakers Series is run by the Office of the Associate Dean, Programs. The series currently includes the Robbie Case Lecture, the McCarthy Lecture and the Jackson Lecture.

The Scholar in Residence Competition

  • The Scholar in Residence competition is run by the Visiting Scholars Funding Program Committee.
  • Normally, two Scholar in Residence applications will be funded each year.
  • This competition is for visits of 6 months or more.
  • The maximum funding for the Scholar in Residence competition is $1500.
  • Visiting Scholars who receive Scholar in Residence funding are expected to engage in at least two activities with OISE faculty, staff and/or students during their visit (for example: a public talk and a set of meetings with faculty and/or students).

The Short Visit Competition

  • The Short Visit competition is run by the Visiting Scholars Funding Program Committee.
  • This competition is for visits of less than 6 months.
  • The maximum funding for the Short Visit Competition is $1000.
  • Visiting Scholars who receive Short Visit funding are expected to engage in at least one activity with OISE faculty, staff and/or students during their visit (for example: a public talk or a set of meetings with faculty and/or students).

APPLICATION PROCESS & TIMELINES

  • Who is eligible to apply for funding through the Visiting Scholars Funding Program?
The Visiting Scholars Funding Program is open ONLY to OISE faculty. The program is meant to help OISE faculty fund a scholar whom they wish to invite to OISE. Tenure-stream faculty, tenured faculty and lecturers are eligible to apply. Seconded and contract instructors are invited to team up with tenure-stream/tenured faculty and lecturers to complete an application form. OISE faculty members seeking funding for sponsored visiting scholars who have been approved by their department may submit a nomination to the Visiting Scholars Funding Program.

A visiting scholar cannot apply directly to the Visiting Scholars Funding Program for funding. A visiting scholar has to be sponsored by a faculty member in one of OISE's four academic departments.
Please note that each department has its own policies and procedures for accepting visiting scholars. Once a visiting scholar finds a department and an OISE faculty sponsor, if the faculty sponsor wants to ask for some funding for the visiting scholar so that they can do something special for the OISE community, then the faculty sponsor has to apply to the program.

  • How do I apply?
Please fill out the Application Form and email it to oise.research
    @utoronto.ca
along with the Visiting Scholar's CV.

  • When are applications accepted?
The Visiting Scholars Funding Program Committee meets twice a year (April and October) to evaluate applications. A reminder call for applications will go out to faculty at the end of March/April and at the end of September of each year.

April 13 is the deadline for visits between May and December
October 7 is the deadline for visits between January and April

  • What happens if I miss the deadline for the May or October round?
Applicants who missed the April or October competition can still submit an application for the Committee to consider. The maximum amount available to support requests made outside application deadlines is $500. The application will be assessed by a sub-committee of the Visiting Scholars Funding Program and will take two weeks to process.

  • How many applications can applicants submit for each round?
Each applicant can submit only one application for each round (maximum of two applications a year).

  • Who serves on the Visiting Scholar Funding Program Committee?
Faculty representatives from each of OISE’s four Graduate Departments serve on the Visiting Scholars Funding Program Committee.

  • How is my application assessed?
The Committee uses several criteria to assess your application. Take a look at the Assessment Criteria Chart to learn more.

  • What are the responsibilites of the faculty member?

Before the Event - Faculty members who receive funding from the Visiting Scholars Funding Program must ensure that all public talks are well advertised throughout OISE. Faculty members are responsible for working with their departmental communications officers to publicize the event on their departmental webpages, the OISE Events Calendar and the OISE Lobby Sign. For publicity assistance (e.g. elevator posters), please fill out the OISE Event Publicity Form and send all confirmed details to Marianne Lau at least 3 weeks prior to the event (2 months for major events).

After the Event - Faculty members are responsible for submitting original receipts for costs incurred by the Visiting Scholar's visit to the executive assistants in their departments.
