  QUESTION: How do students utilize and benefit from online distance education?  

Jim Hewitt examines how technology can be used to support student interaction in distance education courses. The Internet is changing the face of post-secondary education. In Canada and the United States, more than half of post-secondary institutions currently offer online courses and the number of these courses is rising rapidly. Jim's program of research explores how people communicate and work together in these environments. He has made important advances in terms of understand the nature of interaction in computer conferencing courses and how different online processes can facilitate, or interfere with, learning.
