‘Education Premier’ and OISE founder Bill Davis delivers 2019 R.W.B. Jackson Lecture
April 1, 2019
On March 27, OISE held its signature event, the R.W.B. Jackson Lecture. It was a packed house in the OISE auditorium where faculty, students, staff, alumni, and members of the OISE and University of Toronto community gathered to hear the Honourable William G. Davis in conversation with his biographer and award-winning journalist Dr. Steve Paikin.
“It was a privilege to welcome one of the most successful and impactful premiers in Canadian history to OISE,” said Dean Glen Jones. “Premier Davis was instrumental in establishing the Institute, so having him back here to speak was absolutely wonderful.”

The R.W.B Jackson Lecture was established as a tribute to OISE’s founding director, Robert William Brierley Jackson, who was appointed by Premier Bill Davis. Each year, this event aims to address major educational and social issues while connecting, inspiring, and empowering OISE’s community of educators, scholars, students and leaders.
Addressing over 500 guests who attended in person and online, the former Ontario premier spoke about highlights of his extensive political career, including being appointed Minister of Education, establishing Ontario’s college system, OISE, and TVO, and his election of premier at the young age of 41.
Distinguished alumni and friends present at the lecture included former Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mr. Neil Davis, Dr. Eric Jackman, Mr. Bill Macdonald, the Honourable Hugh Segal, TVO Head Lisa de Wilde, Mr. Jon Dellandrea, former Ontario Minister of Finance and Chancellor of York University, Greg Sorbara, Dr. Avis Glaze, former OISE Dean Michael Fullan, Dr. Carol Campbell and Professor Charles Pascal.
