OISE alumnus Tim Fletcher receives Canadian Association of Teacher Educators thesis award

Tim Fletcher, PhD, 2011 in Curriculum Studies and Teacher Development, is the recipient of a Recognition Award for Theses and Dissertations on Teacher Education from the Canadian Association for Teacher Education (CATE). “It is great when one of our students is recognized in a cross-Canada competition,” said thesis supervisor Clare Kosnik.

Tim is Assistant Professor in physical education teacher education in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His current research interests include physical education and teacher education, beginning teachers, teacher identity, and teaching/teacher education practices. Explaining the background for his award-winning work, he says, “Across Canada, most elementary classroom teachers are also required to teach Health and Physical Education (HPE), but often look back negatively upon their own experiences of HPE from the time they were school students, and receive minimal instruction in pre-service teacher education programs.” His doctoral dissertation, Learning to teach health and physical education: The experiences of elementary student teachers, explores the extent to which pre-service HPE courses and experiences could help shape broader and more positive visions of the role of HPE in schools, and lead to inclusive HPE teaching practices.

Tim will present some of his dissertation findings following the CATE Annual General Meeting on May 29, where he will be honoured along with other award recipients at a celebration as part of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) Annual Conference held at Wilfrid Laurier University/University of Waterloo.

The Canadian Association for Teacher Education promotes dialogue and teacher education, research and collaboration. Its thesis awards serve to promote teacher education research and scholarship in pre-service teacher education, in-service education and professional development.
