Applying for Scholarships

Funded students who are in year 2 or 3 of their PHD program are required to apply for a major external award for the following year. If a student applies for an award other than SSHRC or OGS they are required to provide proof of their application to the Dean's Office. If you are planning to apply for an external award other than OGS, SSHRC, NSERC, or CIHR please contact the Dean's Office at the email below to confirm that the award fulfulls this requirement. If a student does not apply for an external award they will be ineligible for funding in the following year.

All students who hold a major scholarship will receive an Academic Excellence Award valued at $2,000 each year that they hold the award.

In addition, PhD students who have obtained major scholarships (with the value of an OGS or greater) for all or most of their period of graduate funding are eligible for a Scholarship Recognition Award in the value of tuition plus $2,000 if they are registered in the year following the end of their graduate funding.

To be eligible for the Scholarship Recognition Award students must meet one of the following criteria:

  • For students covered by graduate funding for both the M.A. and Ph.D. – they must hold a major scholarship for 4 of the 5 years of their funding period.
  • For students covered by graduate funding for the Ph.D. only - they must hold a major scholarship for 3 of the 4 years of their funding period.

Students who qualify for the Scholarship Recognition Award will receive a letter and a form to complete during the summer.
