AWARDS AVAILABLE FACULTY WIDE
Aboriginal Scholarship for OISE Students
The scholarship, with a value of $12,000, will be awarded annually to an Aboriginal student who will be registered on a full-time basis in a graduate degree program at OISE. This award is open to all Aboriginal candidates (Inuit, Native, Status Indian, Non-Status Indian, Aboriginal Members of First Nations or Metis) at OISE with preference given to new applicants. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic merit and previous and intended contributions to his/her community.
Students must complete and submit an Application form
Application deadline is March 15, 2013.
Bursary for Aboriginal Students

Christopher Parker Memorial Fund
The fund was established through a foundation at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education to provide a one-time grant to support full-time graduate students with disabilities to enable them to continue their studies when financial emergencies occur. Under the terms of the fund, preference is given, but not limited to, students with hearing impairments. Applications will be considered as they are received.

Hetty C. Chu Memorial Entrance Scholarship
The Fellowship, with a value of $800, has been established for full-time OISE student with demonstrated potential and promise of service to the educational or related fields. A candidate must: a) be a resident of Canada, preferably of Ontario, 25 years of age or over; b) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited university and be acceptable under OISE's admission policy; c) be in a full-time paid employment for at least two continuous years prior to enrolment at OISE; and d) be in need of financial assistance.

Keith A. McLeod Scholarship
Keith A. McLeod, a professor of education at the University of Toronto for over 25 years, established a scholarship with an award or awards to total $1,500 per year. The purpose of the award(s) is to give support to students in graduate studies in education at the University of Toronto (OISE). Specifically, the support is for assisting graduate students in education that is:

Focusing their study on culturally oriented community organizations and their educational endeavours, or who are studying the educational roles of libraries, museums, galleries, conservatories, or voluntary associations
-
Studying the cultural context of a school community or educational communities; examining how schools, museums, libraries and/or similar community institutions or programs reflect or provide for ethno cultural diversity or multiculturalism, antiracism, human rights, and equity, or Canadian culture
Adjudication of the applications will be based upon how well the above criteria are reflected in the proposal and on the following: clarity of the intent and focus; coherence of the proposal; relevance and applicability; originality and creativity; contribution to the state of knowledge and practice; evidence of theoretical content and analysis; and feasibility.

Margaret I. Hambly Entrance Scholarship
The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education established the Margaret I. Hambly Fund in memory of the Institute's first Registrar. The fund is intended primarily for persons over thirty-five years of age who are residents of Canada and who are returning to continue their studies after being out of the work force for a number of years. The fellowship has a value equivalent to the annual income to a maximum of $800. Criteria for the award will be firstly, demonstrated potential and promise of service to the educational community and, secondly, financial need.

Mary Stager Graduate Student Award
To be awarded to a graduate student enrolled in a program in OISE/UT with a focus on urban schooling. In making the selection the following criteria will be taken into account: financial need, demonstrated commitment to/accomplishment in education in urban schools, and the potential impact of the student's research on urban education. The winner is chosen from students nominated by faculty in the Fall session. No application is required.
University of Toronto Women's Association Scholarship - A&C Coman Scholarship
An award of $500 is awarded to a student in the M.A. or Ph.D. program by the Women's Association on the basis of academic merit. The winner is chosen from students nominated by the Departments in the Fall session. No application is required.
Wilfred Rusk Wees Fellowship
His wife established the Wilfred Rusk Wees Fellowship in honour of Wilfred Wees, an OISE faculty member. To qualify for consideration the applicant must read Dr. Wees' doctoral thesis entitled “The Effect of the Form of Presentation on the Form of Reproduction of Prose Passages” and submit a 2,500 work essay on the thesis. The thesis is available from both the OISE Library and Robart's Library. The fellowship is awarded on the basis of academic merit, financial need, and the quality of the essay. The Fellowship has a maximum value of $1,500 per academic year. OISE is an educational and research institution providing leadership and resources to Ontario's and Canada's diverse communities. As a higher education facility, OISE welcomes scholarly local and international exchange and contributes to the free and inclusive interactions of a multiplicity of national, religious, and ethnic perspectives. OISE not only reaffirms its commitment to unfettered scholarship, but also reaffirms its commitment to combat all forms of discrimination. In keeping with these objectives, applicants for the Wees scholarship are encouraged to attend to the sociological and historical contexts in which Dr. Wees' thesis was submitted and accepted by the University of Toronto in the 1930's. Applicants are also encouraged to submit scholarship applications that consider the implications of racism in education, should this aspect of the thesis prove of interest to the competitors.

William Waters Scholarship in Urban Education
OISE is offering four $30,000 scholarships to promote excellence in teaching in the urban classroom. The successful candidates will be experienced teachers entering a full-time master's program with an interest in questions of social justice and school success for students from economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods attending underperforming schools. In addition to the requirements set out by the graduate program, the successful scholarship recipients will be invited to join the Centre for Urban Schooling and participate in the wide variety of activities related to research, professional development, advocacy and teacher education promoted by the Centre over the course of the year.
Candidates should apply to one of OISE's full-time master's programs. In addition, candidates will provide:

Evidence of successful and current teaching experience in an urban classroom for a minimum of three years

Two additional professional references attesting to the candidate's exemplary practice in the urban classroom
-
A statement of intent (300 words), discussing previous experience in an urban classroom, educational goals for the master's program and commitment to improving urban schooling

APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY & HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Marleen Biggs Memorial Award
To be awarded to a graduate student on the basis of financial need and academic standing who is enrolled in the Counselling Psychology program in the Adult Education, Community Development and Counselling Psychology Department. Preference will be given to candidates whose particular area of study is Sexual Assault. Candidates are nominated internally for this award.
Lora Dolores Antoniette Pallotta Memorial Graduate Scholarship
The Pallotta family has established a graduate scholarship for an outstanding student in the department of Human Development and applied Psychology in memory of their daughter Lora Dolores Pallotta, who was a graduate student of the department. The Lora Dolores Antoniette Pallotta Memorial Graduate Scholarship is to be awarded annually, to a graduate student in the Human Development and Applied Psychology Department, based on financial need, and academic merit, with a preference given to a student whose thesis research is related to “the immigrant experience”. Nominations for this award are made by the faculty of the department. No application is necessary.

- INSTITUTE OF CHILD STUDY (ICS)
Blatz Award
In memory of ICS founding director, Dr. William E. Blatz, two or more awards of up to $250 each are given in recognition of students who also demonstrate academic strength and contribution to the life of ICS, chosen from among the Leighton McCarthy nominees recommended by faculty.
Child Study Bursary
This bursary award is to be made on the basis of financial need (OSAP eligibility to be indicated) on an ongoing basis. Applicants may receive up to $1500. Decisions about this award will be made on an as-needed basis by the Awards Committee. Completed applications to be given to the Chair of the Awards Committee. No public announcement of the recipients are made.
ICS Research Award
Two awards are given to second-year students engaged in and shown excellence in research. These awards are valued at up to $150 each with a certificate. No application is necessary for this award.
ICS Practice Award
Two awards are given to second-year students who have demonstrated excellence in teaching practice. These awards are valued at up to $150 each with a certificate. No application is necessary for this award.
ICS Child Abuse Prevention Award
One award of $150 and certificate will be given to a student who has shown outstanding research or practice in the area of child abuse prevention. No application is necessary for this award.
James Fair Bursary
This bursary was established by the Institute of Child Study in memory of Dr. James Fair who was associated with the Institute from 1970 to 1989. Two bursaries of up to $500 each will be awarded to students in the Child Study and Education program who have demonstrated financial need and who perform a service benefiting children in the Institute Laboratory School. A Lab school representative will put out a call for applications with a deadline of April 30.
Joy Penner Award
This award is made on the basis of financial need in the case of an emergency. Applicants may receive up to $500. Application for this award is made through the MA staff representative.
Leighton McCarthy Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1977 by the Hope Charitable Foundation in memory of Hon. Leighton McCarthy, an MP and a former governor of the University of Toronto, who bequeathed his residence at 45 Walmer Road to the university. This Annex residence is now the home of the Institute of Child Study (ICS). Two awards of $500 are given annually to graduating students in the Master of Arts in Child Study and Education program who demonstrate academic excellence and contribution to the life of ICS. No application is necessary for this award.

Margaret Kidd Award
The fund is designed to provide small grants (generally less than $350) to assist students in the Child Study and Education program in attending conferences that will enrich their professional education and their potential for participation and innovation in the care and education of young children. The fund was established to recognize Margaret Kidd's lifetime of professional achievement in this area.
Applications for grants are accepted in one Fall and one Winter competition. Awards are based on the student's record, the relevance of the proposed conference to the education and care of young children, and plans to 'report back' on the conference to the ICS community. Preference is given to students in the second year of the Master of Arts in Child Study and Education program.
Robert Seth Kingsley Entrance Award
Between two or more students to receive up to $500 who are outstanding applicants to the MA CSE program with a strong interest in special needs education. Students' special education interests should be outlined in the Letter of Intent during the admission process. Consideration will be based on financial need (OSAP eligibility to be indicated) and strong interest in special education.
Robert Seth Kingsley Graduate Student Fellowships
Established in 1998 in memory of Robert Seth Kingsley who was a student in the ICS Laboratory School. Awards will be given to two to five students in the MA programs at the Institute of Child Study and its parent department, Human Development and Applied Psychology. Awards will be made on the basis of financial need and potential for excellence and leadership in special education, by demonstration of ability to work with special needs children and to integrate scholarship and practice. Awards will be given to either Year One or Year Two students.

CURRICULUM, TEACHING, AND LEARNING
Anne Millar Graduate Student OSOTF Fellowship
To be awarded to one student each year who is entering the Master of Teaching Program. Financial need must be demonstrated. The award will be given to a student who best exemplifies the following qualities: a demonstrated commitment to the teaching profession and to the education of young people, an understanding of the contemporary education context, positive leadership skills, care and concern for others, fairness and integrity. The same student will be awarded the Anne Millar Graduate Student Fellowship upon entry into year two of the program subject to confirmation by the Master of Teaching academic faculty. This award is made to the student who has applied to the MT program and received the highest entry score.
The Anne Millar Graduate Student Fellowship
The fellowship will be awarded to the prior year's recipient of the Anne Millar Graduate Student OSOTF Fellowship upon entry into year two of the Master of Teaching Program, subject to confirmation by the Master of Teaching academic faculty. The student should exemplify the following qualities: a demonstrated commitment to the teaching profession and to the education of young people, an understanding of the contemporary educational context, positive leadership skills, care and concern for others, fairness and integrity.

Mary O'Brien Graduate Student Bursary
The bursary is given to a graduate student on the basis of financial need who is enrolled in the Sociology and Equity Studies Department with an ability in women's studies. The student should best exemplify Mary O'Brien's critical approach to social enquiry.
Students must complete and submit an Application form and a Financial Assessment Form.
Application deadline is March 15, 2013.
Mary Smith Memorial Bursary
The bursary is given to one or more OISE students to assist in the completion and production of his/her/their doctoral thesis(es). The eligible student should have been registered initially as an international student from a developing country. The award will be based on financial need and preference will be given to students enrolled in the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education.
Students must complete and submit an Application form and a Financial Assessment Form.

Muriel & Danny Fung Graduate Scholarship
The purpose of this award is to give support to students enrolled in graduate studies in the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education at OISE, University of Toronto. Priority consideration is given to students who are not eligible to receive the University of Toronto’s Graduate Funding Package. Specifically, the Muriel and Danny Fung Graduate Award will be awarded annually to a student who is registered full time in the second year or later year of their program and who's academic and community work promote racial equality and social justice.

LEADERSHIP, HIGHER & ADULT EDUCATION
Ethel Elizabeth Anderson Graduate Award in Adult Learning
To be awarded to a master's or PHD candidate on the basis of financial need. The recipient's research focus will include the understanding of how adults who have been outside the normal educational stream acquire the basic literacy and related skills to achieve their education milestone. Academic merit will also be considered. Candidates are nominated internally for this award.
Jack Quarter Prize in Social Economy
The prize is awarded to student(s) with the best approved thesis proposal to advance knowledge on the social economy, related organizations such as nonprofits, cooperatives, and social enterprises, and related practices, such as community economic development. Candidates are nominated internally for this award.
Michael Skolnik Graduate Student Award
To be awarded to a graduate student in the Community College Leadership Program in the Department of Leadership, Higher & Adult Education at OISE based on their academic performance, promise, and leadership. The application process has not yet been provided.
Ruth Hayhoe Xu Meide Scholarship Fund
The fund will provide financial support ot OISE Graduate Students pursuing Sino logical or China related research and is based on the students' academic merit. The application process has not yet been provided.
William G. Davis Graduate Student Fellowship in Community College Leadership
To be awarded to students enrolled in the Doctorate of Education in Higher Education program for community College Leaders. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit and financial need. No application needed.
