Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Fellowship (SSHRC)

Awards offered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada are available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada living in the country at the time of application.

The value of an SSHRC is $20,000 per annum for up to the first four years of study.  The value of the SSHRC-CGS is $35,000 for three years of study.  Students will not be awarded the SSHRC-CGS beyond year 2 of their program.

• Students could be awarded the SSHRC in any of the first four years of their program.  Students will not be awarded a SSHRC beyond year 4 of their program.
• Students could be awarded the SSHRC-CGS in either the first or second year of their program.  Students will not be awarded the SSHRC-CGS beyond year 2 of their program.
• Students who apply for SSHRC are strongly encouraged to apply for OGS, as well.

Detailed information on things such as eligibility and terms and conditions of the award can be obtained from the SSHRC website. Application forms, when they are available, can be obtained from the site. Hardcopies of the applications are not longer available.

What is the procedure?

For students currently enrolled in a graduate program: applications must be submitted to Margaret Brennan in the Student Services Office, 8th floor by the October 19th deadline.  Procedural instructions for the 2013/2014 application will be provided through the funding listserv or from the department liaison.  Each application is assessed and ranked by the department and forwarded to the Student Services Office for submission to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS).  Each department receives a quota and those applications within the quota are forwarded to the School of Graduate Studies.  SGS does a university-wide assessment and sends the best applications forward to the Council for final assessment.  Decisions are announced in late April 2013.
