The self-assessments provided below were used in a workshop series that are no longer offered. The questions still provide you with the ability to understand which skills you might might need to learn.

Training Note:

  • The OISE library owns many interactive training CDs as well as technology books that can be accessed online (e-resources) for your most recent technological needs from novice to advanced.
  • There are also many free online tutorials on almost every topic or software, such as offerings by Atomic Learning.
  • LearnOntario.ca - tutorials and training resources which support your learning and digital literacy. A collection of "how-to" and "help" tutorials for software commonly in use across our province… in K-12 education, in colleges and universities, and in public libraries.

Intermediate word processing skills are essential if you want to move from, "Oh, thank God that worked" to "I'm going to create…" If you want to be in the driver's seat and can't answer the questions effectively this is what you'll want to know.

Microsoft Word 3: Advanced Word Processing for Academic Papers & Theses
Thesis Production Simplified - do have what you need to format your thesis? OISE does provide workshops and thesis formatting/editing services.

Microsoft Word Draw 1: Introduction to Drawing
How about drawing and graphics? These are skills for rudimentary drawing principles used in Word, Power Point, Excel or even Corel Draw, Photo Shop and Web-Applications.

Microsoft Word Draw 2: Intermediate Drawing
Need more on drawing and graphics? These are Object-Oriented techniques which are essential for Creating Visuals. You are not a slave to pre-existing imagery and layout.

Desktop Publishing with MS Word
Have you heard of DTP? Microsoft Word does offer you the ability to desktop publish, that is, bringing graphics, draw objects and imagery together with your word processing document. You can create a nice looking flyer, brochure or newsletter.

Easy Web Page Creation (using a composer)
Use this test to identify what you know about web editing. There are other web editing programs that follow similar principles. The library collection does have a training CD to help you learn the industry standard and Ministry licensed Dreamweaver.
