O-PERA SERIES LAUNCH

Defining Research Administration and the Aims of O-PERA

On November 23, Normand Labrie raised the curtain on O-PERA by welcoming over 20 OISE staff involved in research administration to the first O-PERA session.

After he described the changing research landscape and opportunity for O-PERA to build an OISE community of research excellence, Denise Makovac-Badali confirmed the launch session's main objectives:

• To network and build a community of Research Administrators at OISE

• To share resources, knowledge and expertise among the group

• To build commitment to O-PERA in order to develop and design the program’s future

At OPERA I will learn about unfamiliar facets of research administration and share my experience and knowledge with others. ...I’m already using the networking opportunities to strengthen one of my projects by meeting with a knowledge mobilization specialist.

Gabrielle DeMontmollin
Administrative and Communications Assistant
Anti-Poverty Community Organizing and Learning (APCOL) Project

In group sessions, attendees defined their expertise and needs in research administration and their expectations of O-PERA. Research administration was defined as anything which supports the overall research enterprise. Key aspects of this work include:

Pre-Award

• Solicitations, Proposal Guidelines, RFA’s, RFP’s, RFQ’s, etc.

• Funding Opportunities

• Proposal and Budget Preparation

• Proposal Submissions

Post-Award

• Research Integrity, Ethics, and Compliance

• Awards by Grant, Contracts, Cooperative Agreements, etc.

• Accountability

• Modifications of Awards and Projects

Other Dimensions

• Technology and Knowledge Transfer

• Honours and Awards

• Institutional Policies around Research

• Record Keeping and Reporting

Thanks to all who attended and took advantage of the networking opportunities. Your feedback will be used to plan the coming sessions. The next meeting will be in December. The date, topic and networking format will be announced shortly.

If you would like to be added to the O-PERA distribution list, please contact Joey Laforge.
