Editor's Welcome

Welcome to Tools for Equity in the Classroom! It is with great pleasure that I invite you to explore these pages, to browse, to ruminate, and to make use of the multitude of wonderful resources you will find here. Think of this as a virtual guide, as you embark on the lifelong journey of infusing equity and social justice into your educational spaces, both in the classroom and beyond.

Tools for Equity in the Classroom is a resource principally for pre-service and new teachers at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Its goal is to connect teachers with the resources that will allow them to create spaces of learning and teaching which are more responsive to and safer for ALL students. As you dip into these pages, you will find a wealth of information that will help you to negotiate both the practical and the theoretical. Classrooms for Social Justice will give you an overview of how to infuse equity into your classroom, addressing the foundational principles of equity and some practical strategies for implementing them. Resources and Tools will allow you to explore particular equity issues from two vantage points: the human rights categories of discipline-specific resources for teaching particular subjects. Community Connections will allow you to take what you have learnt and connect to community groups and organizations which share your concerns. Throughout the manual you will find numerous resources for further reading, many of which are available online. .

This project emerges from a collaborative learning community of scholars, educational leaders, teachers and students, within the OISE community and beyond. Without the contributions of the many individuals and groups who have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of equity those who have spoken out, and continue to speak out, against racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ableism, religious discrimination and other oppressions - this manual would not have been possible. I am proud to have had the opportunity to work with such a dedicated and inspiring group of people working towards the goal of making our society more just.

I hope you find the resources here as inspiring as I do. I wish you the best as you carry the weight of equity and social justice work in your daily lives. At times, perhaps, the journey will be treacherous and your load will be heavy. It is my hope that in these pages you will find a community of others who are treading similar paths, and that this will offer you respite, strength and motivation to continue on your own journey. Good luck!
