Resources for Feminist Research. A journal of Feminist Scholarship

RFR/DRF Author Guidelines

RFR/DRF does not consider manuscripts that are under consideration at any other journal or publication nor does it consider manuscripts that have been previously published in any format – this includes digital publications as well as translations of already published articles. All manuscripts submitted to RFR/DRF are peer reviewed.

Submission Requirements

Manuscripts submitted should not exceed 10,000 words, including references, footnotes and endnotes.

  1. Submit a title page that is separate from the rest of the manuscript. The title page should have the following information: article title, author’s name and institutional affiliation, postal address, e-mail address and telephone number.

  1. Submit a separate page that includes an abstract of no more than 150 words and a brief author’s note no longer than 50 words that includes author’s institutional affiliation and research interests pertinent to the manuscript.

  1. To ensure anonymity, the text of the manuscript should be free of all information that identifies the author – this includes author’s name and references to the author’s own work. Should the author’s own work be referenced in the manuscript, it should be cited on a separate page from the manuscript text.

  1. Manuscripts submitted should not exceed 10,000 words, including references, footnotes and endnotes (see below for formatting details on references, footnotes and citation within the text).

  1. Submit manuscript electronically to rfr@utoronto.ca and put in the subject heading, ATT: Editor, Manuscript Submission.  The following are acceptable formats: .doc, .docx or .rtf  (pdf format will not be accepted).  If manuscript contains figures or illustrations please submit each of these as separate files.

  1. Please note that you may also be asked submit, in addition to the electronic copy, printed versions of the manuscript at different stages of the process. If this is required you will be contacted by the editor and asked to mail printed copies to:

                            Editor, RFR/DRF

                            OISE, University of Toronto

                            2-231, 252 Bloor Street West

                            Toronto, Ontario, Canada

                            Canada M5S 1V6

RFR/DRF does not return manuscripts that have been mailed to us.

  1. Unless the author advises RFR/DRF in writing to the contrary, the author represents that she/he is the sole and exclusive author of the manuscript and that (i) the manuscript has not been submitted or is otherwise under consideration at any other journal or publication; and (ii) has not been previously published – this includes digital publications as well as translations of previously published articles.

  1. The author assumes full responsibility for obtaining and shall obtain all necessary assignments, waivers, consents, and acknowledgements in writing for use and reproduction of any copyrighted work (e.g., text, figures, illustrations, photographs, etc.) within the manuscript.

  1. Editors reserve the right to make minor editorial changes to manuscripts that are to be published by RFR/DRF. Should major editorial changes be required, authors will be notified.

  1.  The author agrees that RFR/DRF shall be the sole and exclusive owner of all rights in and to all material published in the journal and its permission is required for any reproduction of any such material. This includes (i) all rights to reproduce, re-publish and re-print, in whole or in part, the manuscript in any format or media, with or without a fee; and (ii) the right to grant permission to reproduce, re-publish and re-print, in whole or in part, the manuscript in any format or media, with or without a fee. Upon notification of acceptance, the author will be required to sign an assignment form that acknowledges RFR/DRF as the sole and exclusive owner of all rights in and to all material published in the journal.

Reference Formats

Manuscripts should follow the Chicago Manual of Style with limited use of footnotes.

The use of endnotes is preferred to footnotes. References should be limited to works cited in the text. Check previous issues of RFR/DRF for more examples of reference formats.

Examples

Footnotes:

Footnotes should be kept to a minimum and should be numbered. Endnotes are preferred.

1 For an example of this kind of analysis, see Himani Bannerji, Thinking Through: Essays on Feminism, Marxism and Anti-Racism (Toronto: Women’s Press, 1995), p.29.

Endnotes:

Endnotes should be clearly numbered and located at the end of the article before the references.

1 See the work of Yasmin Jiwani, Discourses of Denial: Meditations on Race, Gender, and Violence (Vancouver: University of British Columbia Press, 2006), p. 30.

Examples of Citations in Text:

References to works within the text of an article should be enclosed in parentheses including the author's last name, the year of publication, and page number (Smith, 1992, p. 64).

Multiple works should be given chronologically (Smith, 1992; Bannerji, 1994).

Citations in the text are to be linked to an alphabetical list of references at the end of the manuscript.
