Robin Douglas
Bachelor of Education, 2011-12, Intermediate/Senior
Regional -- Halton/Dufferin Peel Cohort

OISE Student

"You haven't just chosen to study at a school; you've chosen to be part of a special community. The friendships and professional relationships that I was able to develop throughout my time at OISE have had a significant impact on my development as a teacher.

The fact that OISE was located in a cosmopolitan city with vibrant cultural scenes was an important factor in my decision to choose OISE.

I also knew that the University of Toronto had name that would be recognizable should I seek employment outside of the country.

The quality of instruction was exceptional. I was prepared for my interviews after I completed my program and had a good knowledge of government policies and key areas of research in pedagogical studies.  In other words, this program not only prepared my academically with the theoretical aspects of education, but it also helped me professionally."

Stanley Koh
Bachelor of Education, 2011-12, Intermediate/Senior
Toronto West Cohort

OISE Student

"My instructors and peers were always very positive and encouraging no matter what happen, if you did really well or didn't do as well. I like the part that real-life examples were brought into the classroom and not only theory.

I also like how there was the latest in classroom technologies available at OISE for teacher candidates to test out and try (e.g. Smart Boards, iClickers, projector, tablet, etc).

I liked the sense of community that was formed within our cohorts and teachable classes. The one thing that stood out for me in the program was the PPC conference when we had the opportunity to meet all the local school boards as well as international ones for job opportunities after graduation."

Richard Park
Bachelor of Education, 2011-12, Intermediate/Senior
School, Community, and Global Connections

OISE Student"Of all the teacher preparation programs that held a degree of appeal to me, none had as strong a focus on contemporary and relevant issues as the Initial Teacher Education program offered from OISE. Through my independent research, I felt that the focus on social justice and equity, along with its reputation for excellence, was strongest at OISE. With the ever-increasing diversification of the teaching landscape, with regards to students' needs, heritages, and cultures, becoming a teacher that would be able to honour and respect the rich variety in every aspect of a student's life was of paramount importance to me.

In the Initial Teacher Education program, I felt that many meaningful moments of personal growth were achieved through ordinary discourse on extraordinary topics. Issues of race, social justice and injustice, privilege and entitlement were all unpacked thoughtfully by my instructors, and discussed meaningfully with my peers. Additionally, the spirit of collegiality that was fostered between everyone, instructors, students, administrators, etc, made going into the OISE building on any given day a pleasure and a privilege.

I realized that the smallest of actions, words, and ideas can have the greatest impacts on people...OISE has not only shaped me into a confident and capable pre-service teacher, but has truly made me a more thoughtful and considerate person overall."

Teaching and Learning for Change in Urban School

OISE Student

"What I loved most about the program was my cohort. I was enrolled in the Teaching and Learning for Change in Urban Schools Cohort which made my program experience at OISE very unique and dynamic. Instead of taking my entire teacher education program at OISE, my cohort was able spend half our time learning in real classroom situated in a high-priority high school in the city. This experience gave us many opportunities to see firsthand what it was like be an educator in an urban school before we started our teaching placements.

The best part of my time at OISE was not only getting to participate in such an enriching cohort experience, but also doing so with such incredible instructors and classmates. My instructors, both experienced and knowledgeable were also understanding and caring. They acted like wells of wisdom as well as crutches to lean on in times of need. In addition, the classmates in my cohort have truly become friends that I will treasure throughout my life. We embarked our teaching journeys together, smiling at our triumphs, laughing at our mistakes, crying in our moments of defeat and through it all, we supported each other like true family. I expected to leave OISE with a just Bachelors of Education degree, but instead leave with a second family as well. My time here at OISE has been incredibly life-changing and I owe much of that to the people OISE has brought into my life.

My education at OISE has taught me not to shy away from creating change in our education system. Too often we try to mould our students to fit our education system and ignore the ones who don’t fit in our cookie cutter. In reality, we should be shaping our education system to meet the needs of our students."

Bachelor of Education, 2010-11, Junior/Intermediate
Regional Option

"I choose OISE because of its great reputation. TheOISE Student Bachelor of Education program offers a variety of workshops, seminars, and hands-on opportunities for teacher candidates. We also worked closely with highly regarded instructors who were willing to spend time mentoring their students outside of the classroom. It is obvious that the instructors love their work. It is inspiring to watch and learn from them.

I also enjoyed working closely with my fellow Junior/Intermediate classmates. We were a tight knit group. Our classroom discussions were always lively and engaging. Despite my initial fear of teaching math, I managed to plough through. This was thanks, in no small part, to my fellow teacher candidates who also openly voiced their fear. Together, we worked hard and supported each other."

"I sOISE Studentelected OISE as it has a reputation for being a world renowned Faculty of Education that provides a robust teacher training program – based on my experience, it has certainly lived up to, and exceeded, those expectations.

In addition to equipping OISE Teacher Candidates with pedagogical theory, OISE supports its Teacher Candidates through obtaining employment, whether locally or abroad. Take advantage of OISE’s Employment/Interview Handbooks, Resume Workshops, networking opportunities with different school boards (in December), and many other services that the School-University Partnership Office (SUPO) provides.

Through OISE, I was better able to understand how I, as an educator, could impact change in our youth so that they can become active members of a democratic society."

Bachelor of Education 2008-09, Primary/Junior
Inner City Option

"OISE has a gOISE Studentreat reputation in the teaching community. Because of their work and research in education, many people are aware of the school and the name. I had heard good things about University of Toronto and wanted to ensure that I went to a university that was well known for having a good teaching program. I was also really attracted to the city of Toronto. It's a great city to live in as a student because there is always something interesting to do and see and of course so many interesting places to eat. I remember walking about 3 blocks east down Bloor Street from OISE during our lunch break and running into Tim Robbins and Jessica Biel coming out of a hotel when they were in town for the Toronto International Film Festival. So COOL!

I loved that OISE further splits their students into cohorts based on what area of education you want to focus on. I was particularly drawn to the Inner City Option which was my first choice. I thought it was a great opportunity to focus on teaching in the areas that were most desperate for good teachers as I thought that this would be where I could do the most good. Having grown up in the suburbs where schools were not very diverse, I wanted the opportunity to gain experience teaching in these kinds of schools. It turned out to be the right choice for me and a very positive experience in the end because I was able to learn so much about teaching to diversity and creating lessons that promoted equality and social justice/awareness.

My education has given me skills that are transferable the world over. I first found out about the opportunity to teach in England from the huge end of year job fair that was held on campus at OISE. I now live in London, England where I work as a full time teacher in a Year 3 class (equivalent to Grade 2 at home) in an inner city school. I love it here and I’m having the time of my life while learning many skills and strategies to better myself as a teacher. The majority of schools in need of teachers here in London are inner city. There are many Canadian and other foreign teachers here and I often hear many of them expressing that they are having difficulty teaching in the communities we work in. I have never really found it that different from past experience and have always felt prepare to work in London schools. While I know that this is partly because I completed 2 out of 3 practicums in these kinds of schools, I feel that OISE’s overall program really set me up for success. One of the most important aspects of the program was that we were able to complete three blocks of full time practice teaching which offered a huge amount of well rounded classroom experience; which is unlike some programs where you teach for only two days a week. We were also able to attend seminars on topics such as differentiation and behaviour management which were offered several times each term. All of these things and more contributed to a well rounded program that I realize more and more each day has really prepared me for a successful career."
