TEACHING SUBJECTS & PREREQUISITES

Overview

Links to lists of teaching subjects and prerequisites for each of the Intermediate/Senior Division and the Junior/Intermediate Division follow at the end of this subsection. Please note that not all teaching subjects listed may be offered in a given year. OISE reserves the right to withdraw courses for which enrollment or resources are insufficient.

NOTE1: At OISE, prerequisites pertain to specific teaching subjects. Thus, since Primary/Junior does not require teaching subjects, there are no prerequisite requirements for this division.

NOTE2: Unless noted otherwise, prerequisite courses for a teaching subject must be courses which serve as subject-specific courses for a major or specialist program in that particular subject area. (For example, even though a physics major may require math courses, we won’t accept those math courses as physics.)

Proficiency Requirement for French & International Languages

All applicants to the OISE Consecutive Bachelor of Education Program who select French and/or an International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) as teaching subjects must demonstrate oral and written proficiency in the target language at the time of application. This requirement is part of the prerequisite for each of these teaching subjects.

Many applicants will need to satisfy this requirement by taking a proficiency test in the target language BEFORE applying to the Consecutive Bachelor of Education program.

For detailed information about this requirement please refer to the website section on Proficiency Requirement for French & International Languages.

NOTE: The prerequisite for the French and International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) teaching subjects is 5 full-year university courses in the study of the  target language AND demonstrated proficiency in the target language.

Intermediate/Senior Optional Subjects

A number of teaching subjects offered at the Intermediate/Senior level are offered only as options for secondary students in the new Ontario Curriculum. These optional subjects are noted on the list of teaching subjects. While teachers will be needed and are hired to teach these optional subjects, candidates considering these should be aware of two significant considerations.

  • Assigning a practicum placement in the B.Ed. program may be problematic.

  • Securing a teaching position based primarily on optional subjects (particularly if both teaching subjects are optional) may prove difficult.

Using Courses in Progress to Satisfy A Teaching Subject Prerequisite

If you are completing your degree or taking additional courses at the time you apply, then the courses in which you are registered for the Fall and Winter session of the current academic year can be used to satisfy a teaching subject prerequisite. If you are admitted to the B.Ed. program, your final transcript must show successful completion of all prerequisite courses. Courses which you intend to take in the following Spring or Summer Session cannot be used to satisfy a teaching subject prerequisite.

Student Profile JGiannou "I worked closely with highly regarded instructors who were willing to spend time mentoring their students outside of the classroom. It is obvious that the instructors love their work.
