PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT FOR FRENCH & INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES
Introduction
All applicants to the OISE Consecutive Bachelor of Education Program who select French and/or an International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) as teaching subjects must demonstrate oral and written proficiency in the target language at the time of application. This requirement is part of the prerequisite for each of these teaching subjects. Proficiency in French must also be demonstrated by admitted teacher candidates who wish to take the OISE Related Studies Course “Teaching in French Immersion” (EDU 5552).
NOTE: The prerequisite for the French and International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) teaching subjects is 5 full-year university courses in the study of the target language AND demonstrated proficiency in the target language.
How is Proficiency Demonstrated?
Proficiency is assessed as part of the regular evaluation of applications. Each applicant to the OISE Consecutive Bachelor of Education Program who selects French and/or an International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) as teaching subjects must satisfy one of the following:
(a) Achieve a score of 75 or more in each section of the OISE Proficiency Test in French and International Languages.
» This test must have been taken within 3 years of the date of application to OISE.
» There is a fee for this test.
OR
(b) Your mother tongue or first language is the target language (i.e., the language learned in the home as a child is French or German or Italian or Spanish, depending on which teaching subject you have selected) AND, you have studied full-time for at least three years (or equivalent in part-time studies)in a degree-level program at an institution where the language of instruction and examination was the target language and which was located in a country where the dominant language is the target language.
Applicants who fail to demonstrate proficiency in the target language will be deemed to have NOT satisfied the prerequisite for the French and/or International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) teaching subject even if they have the required number of academic courses.
Similarly, even if you are able to satisfy the proficiency requirement by means of your first language being the target language and your degree having been completed in the target language, you will have to present sufficient courses relevant to the study of that language to satisfy the academic portion of the prerequisite.
The prerequisite for French and International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) requires both 5 full-year courses in the study of the target language AND demonstrated proficiency in the target language.

Deadline for Submitting Evidence of Proficiency in French
and/or an International Language
If you are applying to the OISE Consecutive Bachelor of Education Program and you select French and/or an International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) as teaching subjects, the deadline for submitting evidence of oral and written proficiency in your target language(s) is the same as the general application deadline for the Consecutive Bachelor of Education Program.
Deadline information for admitted teacher candidates who wish to take the OISE Related Studies Course “Teaching in French Immersion” (EDU 5552) will be made available at the time of admission.
What is the OISE Proficiency Test in French and International Languages? How do I Register?
The OISE Proficiency Test in French and International Languages is a series of tests developed by OISE to ensure that teacher candidates intending to teach French and International Language (German, Italian or Spanish) have the necessary language proficiency to be successful. The OISE Continuing Education Office acts as the test provider. At the present time this is the only test accepted by the OISE Consecutive Bachelor of Education Program for this purpose.
