ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Overview

Initial teacher education programs provide candidates with the professional education necessary to become certified teachers. This section of the Admissions Guide website pertains to the Technological Education Program. This program is for candidates who have specialized knowledge and training in technological areas and who wish to teach in their area of expertise in the Intermediate and Senior divisions of Ontario secondary schools.

  • Practicum placements for Technological Education students will be in secondary schools during regular school hours.

For more information regarding the Technological Education program, go to:

Note:  These programs are intensive full-time day-school professional programs. There are no part-time options. Moreover, the programs are highly structured in order to timetable all required elements within the period of study.  Regular attendance is mandatory

Technological Education Regular Program

The regular one-year full-time program begins in September and runs to the end of May. In this model, academic coursework, the Practicum and Internship placements are completed full-time over a 9-month period in the Fall and Winter Sessions of the regular academic year.

Technological Education (Apprenticeship Program)

The Technological Education (Apprenticeship Program) follows the same program of study as the regular program, however the program schedule differs. Academic coursework is divided into 2 compressed modules, completed in 2 consecutive Summer Sessions, which usually run from mid-June to the end of July.

The Practicum and Internship components are completed in the intervening academic year. Apprenticeship Program candidates may opt to satisfy the practicum and internship requirement by way of Long Term Occasional employment as a classroom teacher in the candidate’s subject area on a Transitional C. of Q., granted by the Ontario College of Teachers upon successful completion of the first academic module. The candidate would arrange this period of employment.

NOTE: Apprenticeship Program candidates must successfully complete the first academic module before proceeding to the second academic module, the Practicum or the Internship.

Bachelor of Education Degree or Diploma in Technological Education

Candidates who complete a Technological Education program will receive either the Bachelor of Education Degree or Diploma in Technological Education depending on the academic qualifications with which candidates enter the program.

The Bachelor of Education degree will be awarded to candidates who hold an approved degree from a university whose accreditation is acceptable to the University of Toronto, and who successfully complete a program leading to an Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification (OTC of Q), with qualifications in Technological Education. An approved degree must include at least 15 full-year courses or equivalent.

NOTE: At OISE, an “approved degree” can have no more than 10 full year courses (or equivalent in half courses) credited from institutions that are not considered by OISE to be accredited degree-granting institutions. For more information, please refer to Information Sheet: Guidelines for Understanding What is an Acceptable Degree for Application to the OISE B.Ed. Program.

The Diploma in Technological Education will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete a program leading to the above certificate and qualifications, but who are ineligible for the Bachelor of Education degree.

However, the Bachelor of Education degree will be awarded to holders of the Diploma in Technological Education who, subsequent to receiving this Diploma, submit to the Registrar of OISE proof of having been granted an approved degree from a university whose accreditation is acceptable to the University of Toronto. In this context, the degree must not include any transfer credit for courses that were completed in the Technological Education diploma program or subsequent additional qualification teacher certification courses.

Teacher Certification

The Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) is responsible for the licensing and regulation of the teaching profession in the public interest.

Graduates, who meet all requirements of the program, will be recommended to the OCT for the Ontario Teachers’ Certificate of Qualification and Registration. This qualifies the holder to apply for teaching positions in Ontario elementary or secondary schools.

All applicants, especially those who are submitting academic documents from other countries, should be aware that the Ontario College of Teachers is not obliged to accept our recommendation or our assessment of your academic background and will make its own evaluation for certification purposes, based on their criteria.

Police Record Report
To provide increased protection for elementary and secondary students in Ontario schools and to help to ensure that teachers are worthy of the trust placed in them by students, parents and colleagues, the OCT requires that all new teacher education graduates who will be applicants for OCT membership and teacher certification, provide an original Police Record Report and an Applicant’s Declaration about their suitability for registration. Further details on criminal record screening will be provided to admitted candidates and also during the course of the academic year.

If you have concerns about a Police Record Report that might prevent you from meeting this teacher certification requirement, please contact the OCT at 416-961-8800.

NOTE: School Boards require teacher candidates on practice teaching assignments in Ontario schools to complete a satisfactory criminal background screening prior to having direct contact with students. Candidates who are unable to produce a satisfactory criminal screening would not be able to complete the B.Ed. program.
