Background Related to Teaching
Your responses in the Applicant Profile Section of the Technological Education Profile will be used to evaluate this requirement. Applicants provide a written reflection based on personal experiences that they believe have helped to prepare them for teaching. These experiences can take a wide variety of forms. What is most important is the ability to clearly articulate insights that have been gained from these experiences in terms of understanding of teaching and learning, and understanding of teachers’ roles in appreciating diversity and promoting equity and social justice.
-
The Applicant Profile is divided into three parts. Applicants must receive a "Pass" in all parts in order to be considered for admission. (See Info Sheet: The Applicant Profile for information about completing the Profile.)

Selection Criteria
Not all applicants who satisfy our minimum requirements can be admitted. Our final admission decisions will be influenced by the number of applicants and the level of the qualifications that they present for consideration. We will consider factors such as faculty resources and practice teaching opportunities available for specific Technological Education BBT teaching subjects. This may result in the imposition of limits on the number of candidates whom we will admit into some Technological Education BBT teaching subjects.
-
Preference is given to those applicants who have broad-based skills related to their selected Technological Education BBT teaching subject. Evidence of ongoing training and computer literacy is also considered.
-
In the essay portions of the Technological Education Profile, written communication skills are important. Teaching-related experience is recommended, and it is expected that applicants will display a keen understanding of the teaching profession and of learners in today's schools.
NOTE: OISE reserves the right to suspend the evaluation of an application as soon as it is determined that a basic admission requirement will not be satisfied (e.g., Grade 12 graduation, English Proficiency, Skilled Training, Proof of Competence) or that a significant evaluation benchmark will clearly not be met (e.g., insufficient skilled wage-earning experience).
Basic Academic Requirement
The basic academic requirement is Ontario secondary school graduation (grade 12), or equivalent. Typically, equivalence will be based on completion of one of the following:
-
graduation from an equivalent secondary program from another jurisdiction (equivalence requires completion of grade 12 and the award of a diploma which will admit the holder to degree-level post-secondary studies)
-
the General Educational Development (GED) testing program with a score of 450 in each area, leading to the award of the Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate
-
one full-year of study at an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology in a diploma program which normally requires Ontario secondary school graduation as the basis of admission. (Information on the basis of your admission to this program will be required.)

Notes for Applicants Submitting Academic Documents from Other Countries
Secondary School credentials from other countries must be considered to be at a level equivalent to the Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma. OISE will make its own equivalency evaluation for admission purposes. However, applicants are advised that the Ontario College of Teachers is not obliged to accept our evaluation and will make its own evaluation for certification purposes.
-
If a secondary school credential from outside of Canada will be accepted by the University of Toronto for admisison into undergraduate studies, then OISE will accept this credential as equivalent to the Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma.
