TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION TEACHING SUBJECTS

About Broad-based Technologies (BBT)

"Technological education has moved away from a trade-specific focus to one of integration and the development of transferable skills." Curriculum Guideline: Broad-based Technological Education, Ministry of Education and Training, 1995, p. 2.) This is reflected in the consolidation of areas within technological education into ten "broad-based technology" teaching subjects. These are:

You must select one of these BBT teaching subjects. Your qualifications for admission will be assessed in relation to your selection.

 
Descriptions

Each of the trades or professions included with the following descriptions is coded to identify the type of formal education that is required:

(C) a Certificate of Qualification (and related Certificate of Apprenticeship), issued by the Ontario government. (Your C of Q must indicate a Red Seal in trades that qualify in Ontario under the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program.)

(D) a 2- or 3-year diploma or a degree from either a College of Applied Arts and Technology or from a University.

Trades/professions that are not specifically listed with the following descriptions cannot be accommodated in our Technological Education program.

Communications Technology

Communications Technology includes the study of live, recorded and graphic communications.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following:

  • Graphic Arts Designer (D)
  • Radio and Television Technologist (D)



Computer Technology

Computer Technology includes the study of digital computer interfacing, analog and digital electronics, control systems and computer engineering.

Applicants to this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following:

  • Electronics Engineering Technologist (D)
  • Computer Engineering Technologist (D)



Construction Technology

Construction Technology includes the study of residential, commercial, industrial, and other built environments, including the systems required to maintain and service them.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following:

  • Cabinetmaker (C), (D)
  • General Carpenter (C)
  • Electrician Construction and Maintenance (C)

Green Industries

Green Industries includes the study of design, construction, installation and maintenance of landscapes and sustainable environments.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following:

  • Horticulture/Agricultural Technologist (D)
  • Landscape Technologist/Designer (D)
     


Hairstyling and Aesthetics

Hairstyling and Aesthetics includes the study of hairstyling aesthetics and other beauty services.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in the following:

  • Hairstylist (C)
     


Health Care

Health Care includes the study of health and personal care.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in the following:

  • Registered Nurse  (D)
     


Hospitality and Tourism

Hospitality and Tourism includes the study of food preparation, travel and accommodation, and other hospitality issues.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following:

  • Baker–Patissier (C)
  • Cook–Br 2 (C)

Manufacturing Technology

Manufacturing Technology includes the study of product design, process and production planning, manufacturing processes, and quality control.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following:

  • General Machinist (C)
  • Tool and Die Maker (C)
     

 
Technological Design

Technological Design includes the in-depth study of a variety of design processes that may be used in solving technological challenges in the fields of architecture, communications technology, construction, manufacturing, electronics, and transportation. It also includes the development of industrial and commercial products and services, and health, safety and environmental systems.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following:

  • Architectural Technologist/Designer (D)
  • Construction Engineering Technologist (D)
  • Industrial Electrician (C)
  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technologist/Designer (D)
  • Mechanical Engineering Technologist/Designer (D)
  • Fashion Designer/Interior Designer/Industrial Designer (D)
  • Robotics Technologist (D)
     


Transportation Technology

Transportation Technology includes the study of transportation from the point of view of personal transportation, mass transit systems, and the transportation of freight and other objects.

Potential teachers in this BBT teaching subject must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following:

  • Automotive Body and Collision Damage Repairer–Br. 1 (C)
  • Automotive Service Technician (C)
  • Truck and Coach Technician (C)
