FORMAL TECHNICAL EDUCATION & PROOF OF COMPETENCE

In order for your work experience to be considered skilled you must provide documentation showing completion of a program of formal education and skills-acquisition prior to the beginning of skilled employment.

Our assessment of your formal technical education and competence related to your Broad Based Technology teaching subject is based on the documents that you submit by our published deadline.

What Qualifications are Acceptable as Evidence of Formal Technical Education and Proof of Competence?

Our assessment of the Proof of Competence Requirement is based on the level of achievement demonstrated in your formal technical education. It is determined by either the standing in the C of Q exam or standing with degree/diploma studies, as applicable.

The description of Technological Education BBT teaching subjects identifies related trades and professions for each BBT and indicates for each whether a diploma/degree or a Certificate of Qualification is required. Depending on your area of qualification, you will need to present one of the following:

  1. An Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities’ Certificate of Qualification (C of Q). Your C of Q must indicate a Red Seal in trades that qualify in Ontario under the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program. The C of Q must be accompanied by:

    a) a copy of the Certificate of Apprenticeship (C of A) in the same trade, OR, if you obtained your C of Q on the basis of a challenge exam, then you must submit complete documentation of the work experience that was used to establish your eligibility to challenge the C of Q exam.

NOTE: Work experience that has been used as a basis to challenge a C of Q exam cannot also be counted towards our skilled work experience requirement.

    b) a copy of the details of your C of Q examination showing at least 70% (B) standing.

Your C of Q must be valid at the time that you are applying for admission to OISE.

NOTE: We require a copy of the diploma-sized version of your C of Q (the wallet-sized is not acceptable).

  2. A two-year diploma supported by an official transcript, from an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology (or an equivalent institution from another jurisdiction) and/or University (whose accreditation is acceptable to the University of Toronto) showing proof of concentrated study (a minimum of 5 full courses) in the BBT teaching subject for which you are applying and with an overall "B" range average in the program.

  3. A degree or a three-year diploma, supported by an official transcript, from an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology (or an equivalent institution from another jurisdiction) and/or University (whose accreditation is acceptable to the University of Toronto) showing proof of concentrated study (a minimum of 5 full courses) in the BBT teaching subject for which you are applying and with an overall “B” range average in a 3 year program or “B” range average in 15 full-year courses (or equivalent in half courses) in a 4 year degree program.

NOTE 1: Only education that is part of a recognized diploma or degree program will be credited towards our requirement of five years combined post-secondary education and skilled wage-earning experience related to your Technological Education Area. Certificate studies and stand-alone courses will not be credited to this requirement.

NOTE 2: Proof of Competence can be supported with evidence of professional affiliation in a recognized organization related to one’s subject area. Examples of professional affiliations are the College of Nurses (Health Care), Ontario Association of Certified Technicians and Technologists (Technological Design), Landscape Industry Certified Designer (Green Industries), Certified Chef de Cuisine (Hospitality and Tourism), Registered Graphic Designers (Communications Technology).

International Technical Education and Trade Qualifications

If you have completed your formal technical education outside of Ontario and have not yet obtained the equivalent Ontario trade qualification, professional designation or similar credential, then you will have to provide documentation that describes your qualification. You will need to provide evidence that your qualification is:

a) of a standard that is recognized in Ontario in the field of practice, and
b) related to the area of BBT teaching subject for which you are applying.

If your area of qualification is subject to specific Ontario regulation, then you must have the equivalent Ontario trade qualification, professional designation or similar credential in order to apply.

Continuing Competence and the Technical Proficiency Examination (TPE)

Proof of competence in your chosen BBT teaching subject will be assessed in our admissions evaluation as described earlier in this section. However, teacher candidates in the Technological Education Program must also be able to actively demonstrate all tasks related to their area of qualification in a safe and proficient manner in a classroom setting. Therefore, OISE reserves the right to require accepted candidates to successfully complete a Technical Proficiency Examination (TPE), on the fundamental principles, operations, processes and skills of the BBT teaching subject in which certification is sought. The Technological Education Coordinator can provide further information during the program.

NOTE:   OISE makes its own evaluation for admission purposes. Applicants are advised that the Ontario College of Teachers is not obliged to accept our competency evaluation and will make its own evaluation for certification purposes.
