Newly Admitted Students
Satisfying Conditions of Admission
Very often there are conditions attached to an offer of admission. Read your offer letter carefully. All conditions of admission must be satisfied prior to any registration activity, including course selection, attendance in classes, and tuition fee payment.
A valid University of Toronto student card (known as a TCard) will not be issued if a condition attached to an offer of admission is not yet satisfied (a valid TCard provides access to University services including library privileges and athletic facilities).
All documentation pertaining to a condition of admission should be forwarded and specifically directed to the OISE Registrar’s Office, Graduate Admissions Unit. All documentation must be official. Official documents are documents received in the Registrar’s Office in a sealed envelope, signed/stamped by the issuing institution. Faxed documents or documents received electronically cannot be considered official.
It is your responsibility to ensure all conditions of admission are satisfied as soon as possible. At the latest, appropriate documentation must be received by us a minimum of two weeks prior to registration. Thoughtfully consider this deadline when making necessary arrangements. For example, if you must submit a Qualifying Research Paper (QRP) it is essential adequate time is allowed for evaluation and administrative processing.
Registration deadlines for 2013-14 are as follows (so documents pertaining to conditions of admission should be submitted to us at least two weeks prior):
May 10, 2013 Summer Session (first term)
July 5, 2013 Summer Session (second term)
September 13, 2013 Fall/Winter Session
January 10, 2014 Winter Session
When all conditions of admission have been satisfied, you will be sent an All Conditions Satisfied letter. You may then proceed to register in your program.
The following examples provide an explanation of how to satisfy some common conditions of admission. If a condition on your offer letter is not included in the examples below and you are unsure how to satisfy it, contact the Registrar’s Office, Graduate Admissions Unit.
Completion of your current program with a specific average and confirmation of degree conferred.
This condition has two elements that must be satisfied: (a) proof you have obtained the specified average; and (b) proof you have received your degree. You must arrange to have a final official academic record forwarded to us once you have completed your course work and received your degree. If the academic record is forwarded before it has been updated to indicate conferral of degree, the second part of your condition will not be satisfied. You will then be required to arrange for another record or present your original diploma to us. If you complete your requirements during the summer but will not receive your degree until after your OISE program commences, you must arrange to have two documents forwarded to us: (a) an official transcript indicating final academic standing; and (b) an official statement from your Registrar’s Office stating all degree requirements have been completed, you are eligible to graduate, and the expected date on which the degree will be conferred.
Are you a current University of Toronto student? If so, you do not need to submit an official University of Toronto transcript to show degree completion. Instead, provide written notification to the OISE Registrar’s Office, Graduate Admissions Unit when your current degree is complete and conferred.
Are you admitted to a PhD and currently completing an MA at the University of Toronto? Students in an MA degree program at the University of Toronto who have been offered admission to a PhD degree program conditional on completion of the master's program may be dual registrants for one session in both degree programs under specified circumstances. Refer to the OISE Bulletin for detailed information. A request for dual registration status must be submitted in writing to the Registrar’s Office, Graduate Registration Unit and is subject to approval.
Provide an official copy of an academic record.
An official transcript of your academic record from each and every post-secondary institution you have attended must be part of your student file. Official documents are documents received in the Registrar’s Office in a sealed envelope, signed/stamped by the issuing institution. Make arrangements to provide us with the relevant official academic record.
Presentation of your original bachelor’s and/or master’s diplomas.
This condition requires you to visit our office in person. Do not mail or courier these important original documents. When presented we’ll review the documents and retain a copy in your file. If an English language translation is a necessary part of this condition it will be specified on your offer of admission letter.
Satisfactory completion of a Qualifying Research Paper (QRP) or submission of your master’s paper/thesis.
Learn about the QRP requirement in our Guidelines for the QRP Information Sheet. The department to which you have been admitted reviews and evaluates your QRP or master’s paper/thesis. You must submit the paper directly to the department (for example to your Faculty Advisor) not to the Registrar’s Office. The department will communicate the outcome of their assessment to us.
Provide official documentation of either the completion of, or withdrawal from, your current program.
Generally, students are not permitted to undertake two programs of study simultaneously. Make arrangements to provide us with an official letter (generated by a Registrar’s Office) verifying completion of the relevant program or permanent withdrawal from the relevant program.
Satisfactory completion of the OISE French Language Proficiency Test.
For those accepted to the Master of Teaching in Elementary and Secondary Education program, Junior/Intermediate specialization, with a French (Second Language) teaching subject, your offer of admission is conditional upon satisfactory completion of the OISE Proficiency Test in French. This is a test developed by OISE to ensure that teacher candidates intending to teach French have the necessary language proficiency to be successful. The OISE Continuing Education Office acts as the test provider and presently this is the only acceptable test. To obtain detailed information and to schedule the test, go to OISE Proficiency Test in French and International Languages (OPTFIL).
