French / International Language Proficiency Testing
Why is a French/International Language proficiency test required?
We want to ensure that all teacher candidates interested in teaching French/Spanish/Italian/German or in a French Immersion classroom have sufficient knowledge of the language to be both effective and comfortable.
1. Who must take a proficiency test? A test of written and oral proficiency in French must be successfully completed by: • all candidates who have selected French as a teaching subject • all candidates who are hoping to take the "EDU5552 Teaching in French Immersion" related studies course (please note that completion of EDU5552 will not lead to any FSL Qualifications) • Elementary Candidates enrolled in EDU5552 who are hoping to have a French Immersion placement. A test of written and oral proficiency in Spanish, Italian, and German must be successfully completed by all secondary teacher candidates who have selected that language as a teaching subject. For further information on Teacher Assignments in terms of what FSL Qualifications will allow you to teach please view the Brochure: A Guide to Teacher Assignments on the Ontario College of Teachers website. 2. How do I register for a test; what are the steps? All those who receive an offer of admission are directed to the Course Selection and Candidate Information website in order to submit required information. On that website you will register for the appropriate test by selecting from the available options. Results will be posted to the same site once the tests have been evaluated. 3. What are my Testing options if I am currently residing outside Ontario and do not intend on relocating until the beginning of the program in September? Send a detailed email to: languages@utoronto.ca for further information. 4. When and where will the proficiency tests be administered? Testing will be scheduled after the offers of admission are sent but before the acceptance deadline. We intend to make the results available in a timely manner so that applicants can make an informed decision about accepting our offer. All tests are held here in the OISE building. 5. What kind of test can I expect? The tests have been designed to evaluate your ability to understand, speak, read and write your selected language. Information outlining the general contents of this test is at: http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/admissions/7languagetest.pdf 6. What are my options if I do not pass the proficiency test? Candidates who are unsuccessful in their language proficiency test will not be allowed to automatically change academic divisions. Rather, they must contact the Registrar’s Office and request to be considered for a change of teaching subject, provided that they have the pre-requisites. Starting with the 2011/12 program successful competion of the test(s) will be an admission pre-requisite; you will need succssful test results before application. 7. What do I need to bring? Please bring photo ID and a pen, pencil, eraser, and sharpener; but no dictionaries are allowed. 8. What if I have a documented disability and require accommodation?
