Research Use in Secondary Schools & KM Interventions

Our project looking at knowledge and use of research in secondary schools in Canada is now complete. We conclude that knowledge and use of relevant research in these settings is modest, but our attempt to change this through some relatively simple interventions had little impact. This project was funded by the Canadian Education Association (CEA).  For more information please view the CEA's final report

HEALTH POLICY MANAGEMENT & EVALUATION DEPARTMENT (HPME)

Knowledge Exchange Events:  Multiple throughout the year

"Bridging the gap between research and practice is crucial to improving health care. In the field of health services research, it is incumbent upon researchers to translate their research findings into information and tools that can be applied in everyday practice by health practitioners, administrators, planners and policy-makers.

To facilitate dialogue and knowledge exchange, HPME hosts a variety of activities and events during the year. HPME welcomes UofT faculty, students, health professionals, policy-makers and all who are interested to attend".

For more information on upcoming Knowledge Translation seminars and events, please visit the HMPE website.

Research Findings for Parents

We have launched, with the sponsorship of the Canadian Education Association, ‘Research for Parents’, in which we are providing very short, plain language summaries of research in areas of interest to parents. We created and circulated five issues in the 2009/ 2010 school year. These issues were circulated by the CEA to schools, and are being inserted into the newsletters that most Canadian schools send home to parents every month.

CCL paper

The Canadian Council on Learning (see links page) is a major sponsor and promoter of activities relating research to practice in education in Canada. Ben Levin prepared and presented a background paper for an invitational symposium (held May 15-18, 2008) sponsored by the Canadian Council on Learning and the Social Sciences and Humanities research Council of Canada entitled "Thinking About Knowledge Mobilization" on the state of knowledge around how we can better connect research to policy and practice.

This paper :

  • Provides some context for the growing interest in knowledge mobilization;
  • Outlines briefly current thinking on knowledge mobilization, along with a view on the strength of the empirical and conceptual work underlying that thinking'
  • Identifies key areas where current knowledge is inadequate;
  • Identifies promising areas for further work, both in research and in KM activity

Nature of School-University Collaborative Research

This paper, "Nature of school-university collaborative research" was written for the Ontario Education Research Panel who are interested in promoting more partnerships between researchers, districts and practitioners across Ontario. This paper will explore the nature of collaborative research between schools and universities. Five questions will guide the investigation:

  • What does collaborative research look like?
  • What challenges are associated with collaborative research?
  • What factors support collaborative research?
  • What strategies can be used to advance collaborative research?
  • What outcomes are associated with collaborative research?

Journal Of Educational Change

This paper, "The growing (but still limited) importance of evidence in education policy and practice" was written for the 10th Anniversary of the Journal of Educational Change.AbstractThe last decade of education change has been characterized by the rise
of evidence-based policy and practice agendas. Internationally, we are witnessing
efforts to increase and incorporate research use in public services. This article
examines efforts in education to address the research–practice gap through an
emerging field we term knowledge mobilization (KM). We explore some of the
controversy surrounding the use of ‘evidence’, outline national and international
KM initiatives and consider some of the issues and challenges that arise from the
increased interest in evidence and research use in education. We also assess the
current state and desirable future directions of efforts to strengthen the role of
research and evidence in education.
