2011 IALEI Symposium on Research in Education:
Mobilizing Research Knowledge in Education
The International Alliance of Leading Education Institutes (IALEI) is a leading think-tank on international education issues comprised of ten members from educational institutions around the world. The IALEI hosts annual conferences on key education issues and this year's conference focused on Mobilizing Research Knowledge in Education. Canada Research Chair Professor Ben Levin from OISE was the academic coordinator and the keynote speaker was Sandra Nutley, a leading expert on knowledge mobilization from the University Edinburgh. Other attendees included education leaders from Ontario and Canada as well as senior officials from the World Bank and OECD. Researchers from each of the ten member education institutions presented papers on this year's theme.

CCL PAPER
The Canadian Council on Learning (see links page) is a major sponsor and promoter of activities relating research to practice in education in Canada.
Ben Levin prepared and presented a background paper for an invitational symposium (held May 15-18, 2008) sponsored by the Canadian Council on Learning and the Social Sciences and Humanities research Council of Canada entitled "Thinking About Knowledge Mobilization" on the state of knowledge around how we can better connect research to policy and practice.
This paper :
-
Provides some context for the growing interest in knowledge mobilization;
-
Outlines briefly current thinking on knowledge mobilization, along with a view on the strength of the empirical and conceptual work underlying that thinking'
-
Identifies key areas where current knowledge is inadequate;
-
Identifies promising areas for further work, both in research and in KM activity
NATURE OF SCHOOL-UNIVERSITY COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH
This paper, "Nature of school-university collaborative research" was written for the Ontario Education Research Panel who are interested in promoting more Partnerships between researchers, districts and practitioners across Ontario.
This paper will explore the nature of collaborative research between schools and universities. Five questions will guide the investigation:
-
What does collaborative research look like?
-
What challenges are associated with collaborative research?
-
What factors support collaborative research?
-
What strategies can be used to advance collaborative research?
- What outcomes are associated with collaborative research?

JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL CHANGE
This paper was written for the 10th Anniversary of the Journal of Educational Change.
Abstract:
The last decade of education change has been characterized by the rise
of evidence-based policy and practice agendas. Internationally, we are witnessing efforts to increase and incorporate research use in public services. This article examines efforts in education to address the research–practice gap through an emerging field we term knowledge mobilization (KM). We explore some of the controversy surrounding the use of ‘evidence’, outline national and international KM initiatives and consider some of the issues and challenges that arise from the increased interest in evidence and research use in education. We also assess the current state and desirable future directions of efforts to strengthen the role of research and evidence in education.
Keywords: Education, Evidence, Evidence-based decision making, Knowledge mobilization, Research use, Research impact
