Master of Arts (M.A.)

The M.A. is a research-based degree which can be taken on a full- or part-time basis. Students normally would take six half-courses, at least 4 half courses (3/4 of a MA coursework assignment) as SESE courses and write a master's thesis. Note that students who are registered in a collaborative program have their home department course requirement reduced by one half course only. Additional courses may be required of some students, and some students may be required to take specified courses in research methods and/or sociological theory. M.A. students complete a thesis under which may lay the groundwork for doctoral research.

Fulltime M.A. students are eligible for one year of minimum guaranteed funding (for further information on guaranteed minimum funding, see http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/studentservices/financialinfo/minfund.php).

Part-time MA students should note that the minimum guaranteed funding package is not applicable to part-time studies.

The minimum and maximum period to complete the M.A. degree vary and depends on the student's program of study.  Please consult OISE Bulletin, page 23 for details on degree requirements.
