Prospective Students
SESE welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. Each year we receive many more applications for our programs than we can accommodate. Our Admissions Committee must select from among a large number of well-qualified applicants. Each application is also reviewed by faculty and student members working in each applicant’s particular research area.
Admission Requirements
M.Ed. and Ed.D. applicants must have the equivalent of twelve months professional experience. M.A. and Ph.D. candidates who are admitted without sufficient previous study in sociology or a cognate discipline may be required to take a lengthier program of study.
In addition to the general requirements for admissibility as outlined in the Minimum Admission and Degree Requirements section (pages 21 - 27) of the OISE Bulletin, SESE applicants are required to submit the following:
a) applicants must list at the top of the statement of intent at least one (or more) faculty member(s) whose work is of the greatest interest
b) a careful statement of intellectual interests and concerns relevant to sociology and equity studies in education as well as reasons for undertaking a program of study in the Department.
c) two letters of reference, preferably from university instructors with whom the applicant has studied or worked NOTE: M.Ed. applicants may supply one academic and one professional reference letter
d) at least one sample of written work in or related to the social sciences
Incomplete applications may be subject to processing delays or rejection.
The "Graduate Admissions" section of the Registrar's Office website has information about the application process, deadlines, etc. Access the OISE online application here. The deadline for submission of applications for fulltime MA and fulltime PhD degrees is January 6, 2012. If you are applying to several departments at the same time, you will need to know the other departmental deadlines: OISE Deadlines/Closing Dates. Applications for other SESE degrees (flexible-time PhD; part-time MA; fulltime & part-time M.Ed. & EdD) will remain open until further notice.
