SMT / IKIT Colloquium - Thursday, February 11, 2016

The Centre for Science, Mathematics & Technology Education (SMT), and the Institute for Knowledge Innovation and Technology (IKIT) is pleased to present the following colloquium:

“Applications of Data Science in Education”
Dr. Ilya Goldin
Thursday, February 11, 2016
OISE (252 Bloor Street West)
Room 2-295 (2nd Floor, Room 295)

12:00 to 1:30 pm

Education research thrives when we can collect data that explain learning
outcomes in terms of learning processes. How should we sequence the skills
taught in a curriculum? Should recency of information from students affect our
predictions of their mastery? How can students provide valid and reliable
assessments of each other's work? Are there individual differences among
students in how they benefit from feedback? We address these and other research
questions through a combination of user experience design, instrumentation and
data collection, and data science. The findings can be used to inform the design
of technologies for learners and instructors.

Ilya Goldin is a Director of Data Science at 2U, Inc, where his role is to use
learning sciences and data science to advance 2U technology for students and
faculty. Prior to 2U, he was a Research Scientist in the Center for Digital Data,
Analytics and Adaptive Learning at Pearson, and an IES PostPIER postdoctoral
fellow at Carnegie Mellon University. He holds a PhD in Intelligent Systems
from the University of Pittsburgh. Ilya serves as an Edmund W. Gordon Fellow,
funded by MacArthur Foundation and Educational Testing Service.
