Dr. Marks Krpan teaches mathematics, science and teacher education seminar courses in the Elementary Initial Teacher Education Program at OISE/UT. She is currently serving as program coordinator of an elementary initial teacher education field-based cohort. Dr. Marks Krpan also teaches primary and junior honours specialist courses for the additional qualifications program.
Dr. Marks Krpan's primary research interests focus on student communication through images, numbers and words in mathematics and science. Dr. Marks Krpan has also completed research on the development of critical thinking through graphic organizers (such as concept maps and mind maps). She is currently investigating the strategies elementary educators use to teach ESL students mathematics. Other topics of interest include the development of student metacognition, effective assessment strategies, critical thinking models and student explorations in mathematics and science. Dr. Marks Krpan is the recipient of the OISE/UT Initial Teacher Education Program Teaching Award (1997, 1999, 2003 and 2004). She has also been nominated for the OISE/UT Distinguished Contributions for Teaching Award, 2006. Dr. Marks Krpan has authored numerous publications including, "The Write Math", "My Math Journal", "Bold Print" books and a set of math readers which received the 2006 American Teachers' Choice Award. Her book, "The Write Math", has been used as a prime resource in school districts across Canada.
