Jim Hewitt

Dr. Hewitt teaches in both the pre-service teacher education and graduate education programs. At the graduate level, he specializes in computer applications in education. Graduate courses that he has offered are “Introduction to Knowledge Building,” “Instructional Technology: Instructional Design” and “Introduction to Computers in Education.”

Dr. Hewitt designs and builds educational computer environments and examines how they support thinking and learning. His particular interest is in the educational applications of local-area and wide-area synchronous and asynchronous computer conferencing. He is also part of a team that is studying the development and use of multimedia-based case studies in pre-service education. He is also interested in distributed systems, inquiry-based learning, and science education.

His recent SSHRC funded research is entitled “An Analysis of New Models of Telementring.” The goal of this research is to develop and assess new models of telementoring that are of demonstrable value in improving student learning.
