Jim Slotta is a cognitive scientist and Associate Professor of Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto.
In 2006, he was named Canada Research Chair in the area of Education and Technology. He also received the 2006 World Technology Award in the category of education.
Professor Slotta’s current research explores new models of technology-enhanced learning for “smart classrooms.” His designs employ cutting edge technologies such as peer-to-peer networks, geographic information systems, multi-user virtual environments, probeware and cell phone systems in order to scaffold complex curriculum structures and patterns of interactions between students. In order to deliver on the promise of open source and open content materials for education, he has helped to organize a dynamic international community of researchers and technologists who are designing common technology frameworks and exchanging tools and materials. Professor Slotta has published and presented widely concerning the opportunities, challenges and llimitations of technology-based environments
