Community Partners
The AECP department is full of students that are studying with the belief that they as individuals can have positive effects on their world. It’s only natural that SOS would partner with organizations in our community that have a similar focus. We choose community partnerships based on having compatible vision combined with a relational connection with an AECP student, faculty or staff. Right now we have two main community partnerships:
RESULTS Canada
RESULTS Canada is a not-for-profit organization committed to creating the political will to end global poverty. They demonstrate that individuals do make a difference by educating them about proven solutions to poverty and empowering them to exercise their political influence.
In 2008, the Transformative Learning Centre hosted a conference, “Learning Democracy by Doing: Alternative Practices in Citizenship,” at that conference, RESULTS Canada was a guest speaker, presenting their research on citizen engagement on global poverty advocacy. The common interest in participatory democracy led Dr. Daniel Schurgurensky of the Transformative Learning Centre to serve as the faculty rep for RESULTS Canada.
Students on Seven (SOS) has chosen to partner with RESULTS Canada, as we share similar interest in justice and social transformation. Our partnership allows students interested in citizenship issues and extreme poverty to learn more, become engaged and advocate for change.
For more information about RESULTS Canada, you can visit their webpage, contact Elizabeth Dove or attend one of their meetings (meeting dates will be posted on the SOS website and the AECP listserve).
TorontotheBetter
TorontotheBetter is Toronto's home of social enterprise. TorontotheBetter publishes an online directory of social shopping and businesses in Toronto, as well as a blog for news, events and commentary about the same. They believe in rich diversity, a healthy city for all, innovative businesses and informed shopping decisions.
One of our co-chairs, Adam, has been coordinating the video series between TorontotheBetter and SOS for the last two years.
By partnering with TorontotheBetter, SOS has been able to hold movie nights on potentially transformative topics like raw food and making Toronto a more bike-friendly city. While our partnership with RESULTS has allowed us to consider topics of worldwide scope, a partnership with TorontotheBetter ensures that we keep our focus on our local community as well. While busy students do not always have the time to become full-time advocates for social change, our relationship with TorontotheBetter allows us to recognize that our small choices about shopping, transportation, etc. can be revolutionary as well.
For more information about TorontotheBetter, you can visit their blog, search their directory, or contact our own Adam Perry.
