Using the Laser Printer
The AECP Computer Lab has a HP Laserjet 4250dtn. All of the computers in the lab are set to be able to print from it, but you can still use it, even if you bring a computer fr
Download the drivers:
- Unless your computer is quite new, with a relatively new installation of Windows XP or Windows Vista, you probably have to download the printer drivers from the HP site. Go here and select HP Laserjet 4250dtn Printer (which should take you to this page.) Click the link for your operating system, and you will land on the download selection page. Scroll down to the section labelled “Driver.” From the three choices, click the Download button for “HP LaserJet 4240/4250/4350 PCL 6 Driver.” Save the file that is downloaded.
- Run the executable from the location to which you saved the download. It will unpack the downloaded file and create a folder C:\HP LJ 4×50 Series.
Install the printer:
- From the Start Menu, open Printers and Faxes. If you have a previously installed HP4050 AECP Printer, right click on it and select Delete from the pop-up menu.
- Select Add a Printer, and begin the Wizard by clicking Next.
- Select “Local printer attached to this computer” (even though it isn’t actually attached to your computer).
- If you had the AECP Printer previously generated on your system, click the drop-down beside “Use the following port:” and select the TCP/IP port IP_142.150.99.26. If you did not have the old printer generated, click “Create a new port” and select Standard TCP/IP port from the drop-down. When asked for the IP address, enter 142.150.99.26 . Click Next.
- You will be taken to a page that lists the printer drivers installed on your machine. Scroll down the left side to HP, and then scroll down the right side until you find HP4250. If you do not find that printer listed, click the Have Disk button, and browse to the folder C:\HP LJ 4×50 Series. Double-click on the hpc4×50c.inf file (it will be the only one showing).
- Click Next and let the Wizard do its thing. Click Finish to finish.
How to set appropriate defaults for the printer:
- From the Printers and Faxes dialogue box, right click the HP4250 printer and select Properties.
- Click the button, Printing Preferences.
- By default, the printer driver comes with A4 (European paper) selected. Click the drop-down to select Letter. If you want the printer to print double-sided by default, select “Two-sided (duplex) printing.”
- Click Apply and then OK.
- If you don’t want to set duplex as your default, but want to print double-sided on occasion, you can select Printer Preferences from the Print dialogue in any application, and choose “Two-sided (duplex) printing.”
