The Ontario College of Teachers establishes standards of practice for the Ontario teaching profession; regulates teacher qualifications; investigates complaints; administers disciplinary processes for allegations of professional misconduct; and sets a framework for mandatory career-long professional learning.

The Ontario Teachers' Federation is an umbrella organization that includes the following affiliates: The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO), the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA), and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF). On entering the teaching profession you will become a member of one of these affiliates.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) represents 65,000 people teaching and working in public elementary schools in Ontario. Those with primary teaching responsibilities in an elementary public school are statutory members of this affiliate.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 50,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, teaching assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education. Those with primary teaching responsibilities in a public secondary school are members of this affiliate.

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) represents 36,000 men and women who teach in all grades in the publicly funded English Roman Catholic schools in Ontario. OECTA is affiliated with the Ontario Teachers' Federation, the Canadian Teachers' Federation and Education International. Those with primary teaching responsibilities in an elementary or secondary Separate school are members of this affiliate.

L'AEFO a été fondée le 12 mai 1939. L'Association regroupe toutes les enseignantes et tous les enseignants qui travaillent dans les écoles élémentaires et secondaires de langue française en Ontario. Les membres de l'AEFO travaillent dans:

74 écoles secondaires
70 autres lieux de travail (conseils scolaires, institutions spécialisées, AEFO, etc.)
 

Salary Category Placement
A teacher who is a member of one of the affiliates of the Ontario Teachers' Federation may receive an evaluation for salary category purposes from the appropriate agency of that Federation.

The Qualifications Evaluation Council of Ontario evaluates teacher qualifications for salary purposes for those teaching in Catholic schools (elementary and secondary), French schools (elementary and secondary), and public elementary schools.
