ABOUT THE STU

The OISE Student Teachers Union (STU) is a strong body of elected representatives that aims to serve you.  During the school year the STU involves OISE students in social, educational, and athletic events that give you an opportunity to interact with your peers in a fun atmosphere outside of the classroom.

This website is designed with you in mind, and serves as an in-depth guide to STU activities throughout the year.  Additionally, we have provided information on how to get involved in committees, special events, and intra-mural sports teams.  Useful websites, OISE information, and the bi-annual e-newsletter, nOISE, are also included for your perusal.

Throughout the year, the OISE STU is available to answer any questions you may have.  Your participation and input is important, and this year we encourage you to be involved.  Stop by the office located in the OISE building, room 5-199, or send us an email at stu.oise@utoronto.ca.

Who Is A Member of the STU?

Every B.Ed. student at OISE is automatically a member of the Student Teachers' Union. A portion of your student fees goes towards the STU to fund events and activities organized by the STU each year.

WHO MAKES DECISIONS IN THE STU?

There are two elected bodies within the STU:  Class Representatives and the STU Executive.  These groups make decisions on behalf of the student body and organize social, academic and athletic events and activities.

WHAT ARE CLASS REPS?  HOW CAN I BECOME A CLASS REP?

At the beginning of each school year, every cohort chooses 2 people from their class to represent their class in the STU.  These 2 people are CLASS REPRESENTATIVES.  In total, there are approximately 60 Class Reps, and they will come together a few times a year for the STU General Assemblies.  Important decisions are made during these meetings, such as elections for the STU Executive, approval of the STU operating budget, and additions/changes to the STU constitution.

In addition, Class Reps inform the STU Executive of the desires of their classmates.  Most importantly, Class Reps spread the word about events and activities to their classmates! In short, the Class Reps are a liaison between the student body and the STU Executive.

What is the STU Executive?

The STU Executive consists of 12 elected representatives (see listing below) and two paid positions (Treasurer and Media Coordinator).  These 14 people meet approximately once every 2-3 weeks to plan events, organize activities, coordinate intramural sports, and address issues that are important to the student body.  This group of people hold the responsibility of using your student fees to benefit the B.Ed. Students at OISE and they are always open to comments and suggestions.  The STU Executive holds office hours each week in room 5-199.  Stop by and say hello!

How Do I Join an OISE Intramural Team?

Every year, the STU sponsors a number of intramural teams to participate in U of T intramurals.  We have been quite successful in the past, with U of T Intramural Championship teams in Co-Ed Volleyball and Men's Hockey!  For more information on how you can be part of the OISE Intramural teams, visit the STU Athletics page.
