From Monday February 11 to Thursday, February 14th, 2013, the Deepening Knowledge Project and the Centre for Women's Studies in Education will be on the 5th floor of OISE to raise awareness of the Have a Heart Campaign.

From the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada, Have a Heart centers on Valentines Day, and participants are asked to send cards and letters to their MPs and the Prime Minister to demand that First Nations children receive equitable access to resources such as education and child welfare services.

We will have postcards, printed letters, and access to e-cards for you to send your message to the politicians in Ottawa, so visit our table for five minutes to participate on any of the days listed above!

For more about the campaign, please visit: http://www.fncaringsociety.com/have-a-heart

IDLE NO MORE STATEMENT

Dear OISE,

As a body that has been elected to represent your interests, we feel that it is important to draw attention and advocate our support as Canadians and allies to the IdleNoMore Movement and all of those working hard to do something about the injustices Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (Canada) face.

This is not just an Indigenous issue but one that concerns and affect all Canadians.

The injustices incurred both historically and indeed on an ongoing daily basis are a result of a refusal as a nation and as settlers to face the colonialism implicit both in our action and inaction against oppressive tactics enforced by the government. These include breaking treaty promises, abhorrent racism, environmental degradation, and putting the economic interests of corporations ahead of the lives of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples. We support the many peaceful goals of Idle No More to work together to strive for social, economic and environmental justice.

It’s time to get informed and make visible in our teaching the current realities of Indigenous peoples and the injustice that has been occurring in front of our faces. As educators, we must promise to be Idle No More, and the first step is to become educated on the history and lived reality of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

As teachers we are committed to being leaders in our schools and in our communities, we are exemplars for our students to follow. Here is an opportunity for you to educate yourself on the issues.

In solidarity,

Kirsten McLoughlin

Rajen Doobay

OISE STU Equity representatives.
