Hello OISE students! The STU has posted our letter on the home page that we have sent to the Minister of Education and the Cabinet Ministers regarding the revocation of Regulation 274. Below you can find a template and draft to modify and send yourselves. To revoke Regulation 274, provincial Cabinet must pass a 'revoking regulation' with a majority of 9 of 17 members. Encourage your friends and peers to send letters. We want this Regulation repealed as soon as possible!

The email and mailing addresses of the Minister of Education and the Cabinet Ministers are available below as well. YOU DO NEED POSTAGE to send to provincial parliament.

Re: Rescinding Ontario Regulation 274/12, “Hiring Practices”

Paragraph 1 - Explain who you are and what you want (GET THIS REVOKED)!

Paragraph 2 - Explain the ways in which you (and new teacher candidates in general) are uniquely qualified to be in the classroom and how Ontario Regulation 274 is counter to the best education for students.

Paragraph 3 - Explain the effect Regulation 274 has on you personally, and how it impacts your next year if it remains in place (are you in student debt and can’t afford to rely on the supply list? Do you have roots established in the province and can’t leave to teach elsewhere?)

Re: Revoking Ontario Regulation 274/12, “Hiring Practices”

As a student and teacher candidate at OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) I am writing to ask for the immediate revocation of Ontario’s Hiring Practices regulation (Ontario Regulation 274/12).  This hiring scheme detracts from providing our province's students with the best education possible and makes it significantly more difficult for teacher candidates such as myself to gain a full-time teaching position next year.

I believe that new teacher candidates such as myself, bring a unique perspective that every school should have as part of their teaching team. OISE is one of the premiere education programs in the country, meaning that as a graduate this year I will be trained in the most relevant, effective education practices in the field. This regulation makes seniority (amongst unemployed or underemployed teachers) the prime hiring qualifications, rather than merit, skills, diversity, student well-being and best practice.

I am one of many teacher candidates who bring a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences, ideas, and genuine passion to excite and engage students. I am asking that Ontario Regulation 274/12 be rescinded immediately in order that fair and competitive hiring processes continue. It is my understanding that Ontario Regulation 274/12 was passed by way of a cabinet vote rather than the parliament floor. We ask that Ontario Regulation 274/12 be removed immediately through the same process, regardless of parliament’s current status. I am not alone is demanding that Ontario Regulation 274/12 be rescinded. I stand united with my fellow OISE students, schools boards, student teacher unions, faculties of education, parent organizations, and individual voices to remove these unfair hiring practices. I ask you to let the hiring of teachers remain a local choice, based on the merit of teachers.

A response in this matter is kindly requested.
