Volunteer Opportunities

In an attempt to generate new connections between OISE Students and the community, the STU is making this space available for students, organizations, and schools to share information about volunteer opportunities within the community.  If you have an opportunity to list, please contact us at stu.oise@utoronto.ca with all the details and we will be happy to spread the word.  Please note that these opportunities are not officially affilitated with OISE or the STU.

Current Opportunities:

We are looking for a volunteer for our Children’s Book Nook. This unique program promotes early literacy by allowing children to select a book every week to keep. But we need a volunteer to make the program work. We need someone who can read with children, help them select a book to bring home and interact with parents. There are also books to be sorted, stamped and repaired as needed.

The program is held Thursday evening from 4:30 to 5:30 and booking sorting takes place an hour before the children arrive. Volunteers are offered the opportunity to select a book for themselves after every shift.

Please contact Susan Wright at 416-789-7441, extension 233 or by e-mail at swright@macaulaycentre.org.

St. Jamestown and Monelle Ct. Homework Clubs:

To build and sustain truly prosperous communities in a time of rapid global change certainly depends to a great extent on the effectiveness of the preparations the youth make for the world they will inherit. Youth represent a vast reservoir of energy that can be directed toward the advancement of civilization. When encouraged and properly guided they grow up to be among the most valuable human resources in a community. The intellectual development of these youth when directed by qualities such as love, generosity, humility, perseverance and kindness will allow them to realize their inherent capacity.

This vision for our youth can only be realized if others dedicate time and effort to nurture and work with them to develop the knowledge, skills, abilities, and qualities necessary to contribute meaningfully to society.

To advance this process in St. Jamestown and in Mornelle Ct. we are requesting the dedicated service of 4 tutors to assist the youth in the neighbourhood with their studies for 2 hours a week. This initiative will also involve engaging parents in the educational process to discuss their child's progress and any other questions they may have.

If you would like to play a meaningful role in this community building process please send an email and/or resume to: szareey@oise.utoronto.ca
