There are 3 different types of Internships: School Site Internships | Non-School Site Internships | International Internships
Teacher Candidates make a decision of what Internship type they would like to pursue based on their individual professional interests and needs.
School Site Internships
School Site Internships take place in a school, and are often a combination of activities, for example:
- assisting school personnel in a variety of program areas, e.g., the arts, library, guidance, school administration;
- working closely with a number of teachers from various areas of support, e.g., ESL, special education, Reading Recovery;
- helping with the organization and implementation of cocurricular activities, e.g., clubs, sports, school committees;
- assisting with the organization and implementation of school-wide events such as concerts, science fairs, math nights, open house, and the creation of an environmental garden;
- developing parent networks and workshops;
- assisting in curriculum development in individual subject areas;
- gathering information on the various assessment and evaluation practices across a school, or in a certain grade level, to promote further sharing and development in this area.
Non-School Site Internships
Non-School Site Internships take place in a variety of nonschool settings that provide an opportunity to build on and extend the OISE teacher education program experiences. Examples of Non-School Site Internships include:
Community Organizations (Educational) | Museum Programs | Professional Organizations | Performing Arts Organizations & Media | Equity/Social Justice Programs | Athletic/Recreation Programs | Environmental Organizations

Internship Criteria for a Non-School Site
In order to be approved, an Internship placement at a Non-School Site must meet the following criteria:
- The Internship must involve activities that reflect a minimum of three of the Standards of Practice, and allow for an Action Plan related to these Standards to be
developed; - The Internship Site must be a place where new learning will occur. It cannot, therefore, be a place of current or previous employment of the Teacher Candidate;
- The Site must not provide any compensation to the Teacher Candidate for Internship activities;
- To ensure that all Internship opportunities are educationally valuable, it is considered advantageous for the Site Supervisor to have had previous experience in both a supervisory capacity, and in educational program development/delivery.
Any exceptions to the above criteria must be justified to, and approved by, the Academic Internship Coordinator.
International Internships
International Internships take place outside of Canada, some in school settings, and some in non-school settings. Although many International Internships take place in international schools, some occur in a variety of non-school settings, for example, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), museums, ESL programs, etc. Every year, between 60 and 100 Internships are completed outside of Canada including Internships in New York, Germany, China, Israel, Costa Rica, Australia, France, Italy, Jamaica and Vietnam.
