safety abroad meeting - Mandatory Meeting

  • The University of Toronto’s Safety Abroad Office has a number of requirements for students planning to travel outside of Canada for university-related study or work. One requirement is full attendance at a Pre-Departure Meeting. Pre-Departure meetings are sponsored by the Safety Abroad Office.
  • Generally, these meetings are 3-4 hours long, but OISE has arranged for the Safety Abroad Officer to conduct 2 meetings specifically for OISE students going on an international internship which take place at OISE and are 2 hours in length.
  • All candidates doing an Internship outside of Canada are required to attend one of these meetings at OISE, and attendance is taken. Please note that the policy requires "full attendance" at one of these meetings, so be prepared to arrive at the meeting on time, and stay to the end.
  • If attendance at one of the 2 OISE meetings is not possible, then you are required to contact the Safety Abroad Office and attend a pre-departure meeting on main campus where you will receive an attendance certificate that you will present to SUPO. All students attending the workshop will be provided with a copy of the Pre-Departure Orientation Handbook.
  • Note that the University of Toronto does not support internships that involve travel to locations where the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAIT) has issued an advisory against travel. Independently arranged internships require authorization from the Academic Internship Coordinator before proceeding with travel plans.
  • Safety Abroad Meetings:

    Wednesday, February 13, 2013; 4:30 - 6:30 - OISE, Room 2-212
    Wednesday, April 10, 2013; 4:30 - 6:30 - OISE, Room 2-212

  • Candidates doing an International Internship are required to attend one Safety Abroad Session. Attendance is taken at each meeting, and a Teacher Candidate must attend for the full meeting. Please email Anne Leverman to let her know which meeting you will attend.

Passport Picture

  • A quality copy of your passport picture page is required to be submitted with your documents to SUPO by Thursday, April 5, 2012.
  • A Canadian passport is valid for five years. Make sure that your Canadian passport does not expire until you are back in Canada. Renewing a passport, abroad is a complicated process; returning home without one would also be extremely difficult. Some visas require that your passport is valid at least six months after your return to Canada.
  • Passport application forms are available at any passport office or travel agency. Make a photocopy of your passport’s identification page and keep it separate from the original when you travel. For added security, leave a photocopy with a friend or a relative at home, as well as one with your U of T exchange office. This will greatly speed up the replacement process should you lose your passport.
  • Remember, your passport is your most important legal document while traveling overseas. In some countries it is required that foreigners carry their passports at all times. Guard your passport carefully.
