ELEMENTARY PRACTICUM
General Organization
Primary/Junior Teacher Candidates complete one Practicum in each of the Primary and Junior divisions.

Mentored Inquiry in Teaching
Mentored Inquiry in Teaching (MIT) is a 0.25 credit course which is designed to prepare new teachers to make connections between theory and practice by linking course work and field experiences. Teacher Candidates will spend time observing and working in the community and school with administrators, lead teachers and/or Associate Teachers in the weeks leading up to the start of their Practicum. This opportunity allows Teacher Candidates to gain a familiarity with the environment in which they will carry out their placement as well as engage in reflective practice related to issues and challenges, problem-solving and questioning of assumptions about teaching and learning from a range of educational perspectives. Teacher Candidates are not be teaching during MIT days.
Inquiries about MIT and Practicum should be directed to Paul Kelly or John Smith who are responsible for the administration of these field experiences.
SECONDARY PRACTICUM
General Organization
Intermediate/ Senior Teacher Candidates complete one Practicum in each of their teaching subjects, pending Associate Teacher availability.
- An extended Practicum of 7 weeks will take place in the Teacher Candidate’s Anchor Subject.
- All Secondary Teacher Candidates are assigned to a different school for each Practicum session, thus having an opportunity to learn from a range of experiences.
- Middle school (Grade 7-8) and/or private school placements may take place to accommodate I/S Teacher Candidates where insufficient Associate Teachers are available in the publicly funded secondary school system.

This opportunity allows Teacher Candidates to gain a familiarity with a secondary school environment; however, this experience may not necessarily take place within their Practicum placement school. During their MIT course, Teacher Candidates will use this field experience to engage in reflective practice related to issues and challenges, problem-solving and questioning of assumptions about teaching and learning from a range of educational perspectives. Teacher Candidates are not be teaching during MIT days.
