Elementary STEP Program

The Student Teacher Experience Program (STEP) is a compulsory part of the Primary/Junior and Junior/ Intermediate programs. During STEP, Teacher Candidates spend days observing and working with Associate Teachers and students in their Practicum classrooms during the weeks that lead up to the start of Practicum. STEP days allow Teacher Candidates to gain familiarity with the environment in which they will carry out their placement. STEP days are not included in the summative evaluation.

Inquiries about STEP and Practicum should be directed to the Elementary Option Coordinators who are responsible for the administration of these field experiences.

SECONDARY PRACTICUM

General Organization

Intermediate/Senior Teacher Candidates complete one Practicum in each of their teaching subjects, pending Associate Teacher availability.

  • All Secondary Teacher Candidates are assigned to a different school for each Practicum session, thus learning from a range of experiences.
  • Middle school placements in Grades 7-8 are not available to I/S Teacher Candidates, but can be pursued as an Internship opportunity.

Secondary Orientation Days

Secondary Teacher Candidates have two Orientation days in their Practicum school during the week preceding the start of each Practicum. Orientation days provide Teacher Candidates with an opportunity to become familiar with the school, to view the school more holistically, and to observe and reflect upon various aspects of school life.

Orientation days are intended to accomplish the following:

  • Principal or designate meets with the Teacher Candidates assigned to the school to discuss such matters as school programs and policies, school organization and facilities, the school and the community, and the roles and responsibilities of Teacher Candidates in the school;
  • A tour of the school provides Teacher Candidates with opportunities to observe school activities in the resource room, auditorium, music and art areas, special education facilities, computer labs, and cooperative education areas;
  • Teacher Candidates observe the Associate Teacher with whom they will be working. Associate Teachers are encouraged to have their Teacher Candidates observe them in classroom teaching situations;
  • Teacher Candidates are not expected to teach during this time;
  • Associate Teachers should not evaluate Teacher Candidates during these two days;
  • Associate Teachers may wish to take this time to discuss teaching assignments, expectations, and evaluation with their Teacher Candidate;

Note: There is no need for Teacher Candidates to contact the school before orientation.

Inquiries about Orientation days and Practicum should be directed to the Secondary Program (SP) Coordinators  who are responsible for the administration of these field experiences.
