Mentoring for Mentors: Model Demonstration Boards
Presenters: Wendy Whitehead (Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board), Kendall Olsen & Laurie Holliday (Rainy River District School Board)
Key Ideas/Findings:Representatives from two Ontario District School Boards present their experiences and findings resulting from participation in the Ontario Ministry of Education’s pilot Mentoring Demonstration Project.
- successful matching of mentors and new teachers depended upon compatibility
- support for mentors included full day training sessions, networking time, inservice and support of administrators, celebration
- importance of steering committee - members, roles and responsibilities, integration of concepts in orientation, PD and mentoring
- alignment of mentorship program and NTIP is important
- key principles of induction programs, including acknowledgement of the attitudes and stages of concern of new teachers
- effective mentoring models include one-on-one, same school, same family of schools, at a distance, group mentoring, within the context of a professional learning community
