Departmental News

On Monday, October 27, the Centre for the Study of Students in Postsecondary Education hosted its second annual Fall Lecture featuring renowned scholar, Dr. Alexander Astin. Dr. Astin’s talk, ‘Cultivating Students Spiritual Development: A Challenge for Assessment and Involvement,’ was attended by over 200 guests, including faculty, staff and graduate students from across the GTA and beyond, and was presented online through web-cast.

Alexander W. Astin is Allan M. Cartter Professor of Higher Education Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles and Founding Director of the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA.  Author of 20 books and more than 300 other publications in the field of higher education, he has been a recipient of awards for outstanding research from more than a dozen national associations and professional societies, and a recipient of eleven honorary degrees.  A 1990 study in the Journal of Higher Education identified Dr. Astin as the most frequently-cited author in the field of higher education.

The lecture is one of many events and programs offered by CSS; coming up on November 18, the Centre presents another instalment of its monthly Assessment Exchange series focused on legal issues at university/college campuses. Visit the CSS website for full event details as well as information about its research initiatives and reports. http://css.oise.utoronto.ca.

Conferences and Presentations

Deanne Bogdan, delivered the George Kneller Lecture at the annual conference of the American Educational Studies Asssociation in Savannah, Georgia, in October 2008.

Leonie Brown, (Higher Ed.) presented a paper at the Paris International Conference on Education, Economy and Society (PIOCEES), during the summer 2008.  Leonie's presentation discussed why spirituality deserves a central place in higher education.  Leonie states, "though it was a risk talking about such a topic, I had to be true to my own spirit.  Hence, I submitted my paper entitled, "The Student Experience of Black Women and Spiritual Wholeness: Recovering from Spirit Injury in Higher Education."  The paper discussed how, as Black women, our educational experience can be hindered when we fail to see ourselves (values, beliefs, customs) represented in the curriculum.  It also suggests the classroom, often requires us to leave our identities at the door, as we assimilate to the mores of the dominant culture".  Her research challenges this concept, and suggests the importancce of shared identities in the classroom to avoid "spirit-injury" - a pervasive sense of dispair that can often occur.
