Orientation Agenda

Accessibility Services

If you are registered for accomodations at UTM or UTSC, please note that you will need to move this registration to Accessibility Services on the St. George Campus over the summer. Ask your accessibility/disability counsellor at UTM or UTSC to forward your documentation to Accessibility Services on the St. George Campus.

Have accommodations in place already that are relevant to practicum? Please advise Greg Boudreau (greg.boudreau@utoronto.ca) and Jeananne Robertson (jt.robertson@utoronto.ca).

Have academic accommodations already, but think you might need new accommodations for practicum? Book an appointment with Jeananne to discuss. Practicum accomodations should be put in place as early as possible in the summer to allow time for planning.

Timetable and Important Dates

The course timetable, schedule of classes and field experiences (a.k.a. important dates), and other key documents for the 2017-18 academic year will be updated throughout the summer on the Professional Year Program Information (5th Year) webpage. You will also receive a paper copy of many of these documents in your Orientation Day package.

Course Enrolment

The Registrar's Office at OISE will load your BEd Year 5 academic courses - you do not need to register for them. Check your ROSI/ACORN toward end of the summer to see your timetable. Double check your timetable in the first week of classes as some changes can occur throughout the summer.

If applicable, teacher candidates are responsible for signing up for the Teaching in Ontario Catholic Schools course through the Continuing and Professional Learning (CPL) website at http://uoft.me/TOCS.  Registration is now open for the 2017-18 offerings of the non-credit course. This course is a requirement to teach in Ontario Catholic Schools and interested CTEP candidates normally take it in their 5th year. Please see your email of July 13th.

Payment of Tuition Fees

Even though you are coming to OISE this year, your payment of tuition fees deadline is that of the faculty/college where you took your undergraduate degree. If you are unsure of this deadline, please contact the Registrar's Office at your home faculty/college.

U of T now allows credit card payment of tuition.

Criminal Record Check

You will need a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) in order to do your teaching practica. Your VSS will need to be no more than 6 months old from the start date of your practicum. If you plan to do your practica in two different school boards, you will need an original VSS to present to each board.

Health & Safety Training

CTEP requires all teacher candidates to have completed the online learning module Worker Health & Safety in 4 Steps in advance of practicum. You must retain a digital copy of the certificate of completion.

Many school boards require teacher candidates to complete additional health & safety training and/or policy sign-offs before beginning practicum. You can review the procedures for your desired school board(s) using the Guide to Onboarding Processes by School Board. Any relevant links or documents that have been provided to CTEP can be found on the webpage Practicum for Teacher Candidates. If you have spare time this summer, you may wish to complete some training ahead of time as appropriate; for example, you can watch online training videos or read policy documents if they are available online. In some cases it will not make sense for you to complete aspects of the training until just before or just after the start of practicum; for example, training that must be coordinated by human resources personnel. Please do not contact the school board to obtain materials or submit paperwork in the summer; leave that to the CTEP Office.
