Research Overview

My research includes three broad areas. First, I'm interested in how language policies and language policy advocates construe the value of language education. Are languages resources for individual social mobility, national prosperity, and/or geopolitical security? Or do we have rights to use, learn, and teach language? Some of my work looks at the tension between these ideological rationales historically. Other work is more theoretical in developing a political-economy approach to language rights. Still other work is more focused on policy advocacy and activism related to language education.

Second, I'm interested in education policy reforms in Germany and their impact on racialized students there. I've conducted one major study of a partially-failed policy measure in Hamburg, and look forward to future research there.

Finally, and most recently, I have begun to study language teacher education. One angle of this work has been the relationship between teachers' language proficiency and their pedagogical practice. As part of the instructional team for OISE's new "Supporting English Language Learners" course in the MT program, I'm collaborating on ethnographic inquiry of how this course unfolds. Our project recently received funding through SSHRC's Insight Grant program.

Prior to joining the faculty at OISE, I taught undergraduate- and graduate-level language teaching methods courses for teacher candidates, master's courses for practicing teachers on language diversity, second language learning, and educational technology, and doctoral courses on U.S. educational historiography, educational policy analysis, second language education policy, and qualitative research methods.

Other Information

My academic work is rooted in the decade I spent as a second language teacher in urban public schools in the United States. For most of this time, I worked with newcomer immigrant students in middle schools in Washington, DC and Chicago, but also taught newcomer ESL and German in a Tempe, Arizona high school. I was an active union member throughout my tenure as a K-12 teacher, serving as building representative or on the building-level union committee for eight years. I also served on the Executive Board for the Washington Teachers Union, Local 6, American Federation of Teachers.
