Focus: Science and Technology in Society

I am a Sessional Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education and a full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. I received my Ph.D. from OISE/UT in 1999. I teach graduate and undergraduate courses related to the place of technology in society, as well as in the history of education in Canada. My research interests are in the interplay between science & technology in society and the history of women and higher education. My current research interests explore concepts of modernity, looking at the creation of modern Canadian women, the roles of science, technology, and education in creating a modern Canada, and the historical uses of educational technologies in creating a modern system of education. In my online and face-to-face courses at both universities, I experiment with a number of learning technologies.

SES 2999, Women, Technology and Society

In this course, we examine historical and contemporary perspectives on women’s relationships with technology in a social context. We consider questions such as: Are technologies gendered? What role(s) do race and class play in the relationships between gender and technology? We will explore how gender impacts technology, as well as the impact of technology on gender formation.
